I've done some boards like that and use single side dots except at 12. Same thing with boards with trees of life/vines, fancy banjo style inlay or whatever. I only use double dots at 12 on the side. Don't know whether or not that is proper, but it's what I've always done.

Martins that have that inlay pattern do double side dots at the 12th and single dots for all the other positions. So if Martins are considered proper,....

Edit: Oops, correction: I checked my HD-28VR which has that same fretboard marker inlay pattern. Double side dots at the 12th and single side dots at 3, 5, 7, 9, 15, & 17.

That is a typical pattern for a guitar, with some also having a dot at the third fret. I follow the "dots" on the board. On some guitars I have only done side dots, but again that is the pattern I follow - (3),5,7,9,12,15,(17)

I do 3,5,7,9,12,15,17,19, with 7 and 12 being double dots.

I have a Martin 000 with that layout and like others have said it’s only double side dots at the 12th.

That’s pretty much my default fretboard decor. I do single dots at all locations including 12.

I justify it by figuring that any player that hangs out in that territory on a 14 fret neck shouldn’t need two dots to know where they are and it looks classy. Real reason? It’s easier. :)

I've always used one dot at the 12 also. I figure the two frets away from the rest is a clear enough indicator.

Yes, but having two dots is even clearer. And, I can fall back on the "it's tradition" rationale. All the guitars I've owned that had side markers had two dots at the 12th fret.

Then there's that time I put three dots at the 12th fret. I was installing the side dots on a guitar which was the first one on which I had used a fancy fret marker set that started at the first fret. I drilled the holes for the side markers starting from the first fret and working my way up with the neck. I drilled the two holes as usual at the 12th fret with it's double fret marker inlay only to realize that I had drilled them at the 9th fret (#$%@ fancy inlay). Since the fretboard binding was curly koa, there was no way to fill the holes invisibly. Solution? Three dots at the 12th fret. Overkill, yes, but the simplest option. No excuse for not knowing which fret you are on with that guitar.
