Probably birch or maple veneer; I used some of both. The way it's sliced produces flat cut leaves, so the edge grain is vertical, showing a lot of ray pattern. Wood is also most reflective on the quartered surface. The yellow wood, which, so far as I know, is Euonymous atropurpuria is also pretty reflective, and is well quartered. I picked that up about 40 years ago when a friend and I were salvage logging for fire wood at a construction site near Boston. It was winter, so there were no leaves to go by.

It also helps on that one that I put a couple of coats of varnish on the top. That's the lowest density piece of WRC I've seen, and also the softest. I varnished it to help harden the surface, and seal it so that I could stick on a piece of paper with spray adhesive without worrying that it would get into the top and cause problems later.

There are some truly wonderful designs on this thread and some great inspiration.

The last one I did was for a friend's 50th birthday with a motorcycle theme. The rosette was inspired by the brake disc and calipers with five MOP discs to represent his 5 decades.

I like it! Usually I don't care for that color scheme, but being compact and close to the sound hole I think it's nice.
