Are you referring to an on/off switch, or the internal centrifugal switch?

Mine was an on/off switch, though I would guess that the centrifugal switch could fill with dust.
Especially on a sander.

Ed: I understand the desire to DIY — I do most of my own shop electrical work. But not motors. Electrical component failures are often due to overheating, caused by overloading, caused by a tight bearing. No sense in replacing a component, only to have it blow again. It’s a specialised area, and I have access to a rather good motor repair place that is very fair. Just my two cents

It's not so much that I desire to DYI, I don't, but changing a capacitor seemed approachable. Anything beyond and the experts get called in.

Much to my delight, it was indeed the start capacitor malfunctioning, a quick sub out and I'm back in biz...

Good to hear you got the motor sorted. It's always nice when it's an easy fix.
The motor on my compressor "went up". I think it's a bearing, but I haven't torn it apart yet. I found another motor in my "spares" collection but the rotation is wrong. So I need to either fix the old motor or change the rotation (if possible) on the replacement. Another possibility is to orient the replacement backwards so it dangles off the edge of the mounting plate. The last possibility is, God forbid, buy another motor!
I still have a small pancake compressor to get me by, for the small amount I need one.

Assuming for the moment the motor in question is a single-phase motor, open the connection box and look for leads 5 and 8. Reverse those, and your motor will spin the other way. If you don't have access to those two leads, you will need to find other options.

That’s awesome. I didn’t realize it was getting up to speed if you turned it by hand. That’s almost always an indication of a capacitor issue. At least in my experience.

I’m probably butchering it, but some of these tools take more current at startup to get those initial turns than we’re able to supply; the cap acts as a buffer supplying the extra kick. My first drill press came with a bad cap. It would run, but only if I spun the chuck with my hand to help it get moving.
