For reasons I won’t bore you with, I have acquired a fair quantity of .8mm wood veneer. About half of it is rosewood, the rest is other dark wood, species uncertain.

It’s in five foot by one foot sheets.

Has anyone made use of such materials? Any suggestions?

Neck laminations, purfling (and shims)

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

Arm bevels if you can find a matching binding.

Bri beat me to it :)

Several good uses have already been given but I'm sure if you just keep it around, more uses will hit you and you'll be glad you have it.

Thanks for the suggestions, chaps.

My first thought was to try a 3 piece laminated back and sides (maybe headstock veneers) but gluing up veneers successfully seems like it will need a vacuum bag setup which I don’t have. Maybe it’s time I made one.

I was also worried about bending laminated boards and the effect on the glue.

Some of the sheets are so pretty I’d be loathe to use them for purfling or shims, but the arm bevel cap is a nice suggestion.

Sounds like another one of those things that you don't need until you have it. I suspect that in a couple years, you will be searching for some more.

I would definitely do laminate sides with it and try to find solid backs that match. Nothing wrong with lam backs too I guess. Anyway it sounds like a problem that is worth having ;)

I don't use vacuum bags for laminating veneers. I laminate between two pieces of smooth melamine coated particle board (and waxed paper) and use a bunch of clamps. The boards only have to be about 9 inches wide to do back sets. I laminate sides over a bending form with cauls and clamps and use formica scraps to provide a smooth surface to laminate against. I use clear epoxy (west system 105 /207 hardener). Once the glue sets the sides will hold their shape for years.
As I have mentioned many times before - heating and drying the veneer just before laminating with epoxy I have found to give the most stabile laminations.

And cinder blocks will stand in for clamps in Clay's scenario

"Why not resaw it?"

You need an awful good set up and a mighty thin blade to resaw .8mm veneer. pizza
