does anyone know of any good youtube videos or even dvds on hand carving guitar tops. I have seen a few that seem crude. I would like to see one where they are binding as well. any suggestions would be appreciated.

That was a good tutorial. but it did bring up another question. After you have everything curved how hard is it to route the neck cavity if your using a bolt on neck? wouldnt your curve give you a lopsided neck pocket? I have only routed out a neck cavity once and it was on a flat surface so it was pretty easy.

You da man, Chris!
Is it weird building right-hand guitars being a left-handed fellow?
Thanks for the great video,
Dan

PS: It's easy, cause although being a lefty, I build, and play, right handed guitars :)

Cool Chris, I thought maybe you played like a "mirrored" Hendrix.

Tayser, you ask any question you like. Believe it or not there are a lot of very friendly and helpful people here.

I also say ask whatever you want. It's a forum designed just for that. I am decent enough at building guitars, but when it comes to wiring I sometimes have to ask a lot of questions. ALL Questions keep the forum active and alive and are welcomed.

Hey Chuck. Thanks for the further implication of not being friendly. However, I answered his question, no? Twice actually! Even when I took issue with stuff. And before he asked "why be a dick?" all I did was tell him he should google stuff (without profanity or name calling I might add). Now, I said more after that... but he literally asked for an explanation.
I'd argue that still makes me pretty dang nice... just not hand-holdy. I believe your response handled that part just fine.
I'd argue that in the end, he's more happy to have gotten information than the pat on the back ;)
Chris

Chris,
I think you are an extremely talented builder, much better than I am by a long shot, your wood purfling and binding are second to none. And your videos are very helpful and you explain a lot. But you tend to police these boards about what people can ask and post. We didn't all have experienced luthiers like you had such as David Myka and Todd Stock to show us the ropes. If he wants to ask basic questions, it doesn't matter. Let him ask. It isn't hurting anyone.

O.K. Though I rarely post on forums, I feel the need to defend Chris. A few years back he sent me a beautiful unfinished anigre and black walnut guitar body along with the matching neck. It was guitar of his own design and has an ebony fretboard with meticulously done inlays of the solar system. It even has fiber optic fret markers. He did this so that I could have the opportunity to learn how to carve a neck, fret, route pickup cavities, install a bridge, etc. He GAVE it to me for FREE. We did not know each other, so this was not like giving it to a good friend or family. He did this out of the kindness of his heart and asked nothing in return. Not only is he very talented, he is generous. Just thought I would share.

Be thankful this isn't like some of the car guy forums I visit daily.
There are a lot of self-appointed bouncers and trolls who try to keep all the FNG's and regulars in line with their particular vision of forum conduct.

Chris I appreciate your point... but... say someone is new to all this, does a google search and finds this forum first - wow! a place where loads of experienced folk hang out might be a better place to sart asking questions, than on You tube, where its tricky to maybe determine whether the advice is good, bad, or indiffrent?

I dont believe its a case of someone not valuing your time in answering - but would take it as a complement to those experienced folk on here, that this is THE first place of call for sound, correct advice and opinion?

You have been more than helpful in directing the OP, and even more so in taking the time to produce such excellent videos and sharing your experience and knowledge. I dont believe for one moment that this is not appreciated, or undermined by someone coming direct. Afterall, is not finding this site, checking out the quality of work done and then posting a question not a decent bit of research in itself?

Tayser, check out "Archtop Guitar Design & Construction" DVD's by Robert Benedetto. Some good info in the 4 disc set.

There was no edit whatsoever. That's exactly what I wrote when I asked the first question. I'm not trying to make you look bad. But don't be writing things that are not true.

I didn't ask the question to start an argument. I asked because one of the videos I watch on a bell curve. He did it with a grinder. I couldn't see myself using that method so I thought I would ask. Plus EJ told me first to look up your tutorial which I did. There was no need of you posting the YouTube. That was you wasting your time. The second question your right I didn't research it all. I watched the tutorials of you doing the bell curve and I watched you putting on the binding. I didn't see the one about the neck pocket. Did I look that hard absolutely not. While I was watching all I was thinking is how is this guy going to route the neck pocket. So I thought I would ask. When you replied I thought you were being a dink so I asked why. I respected your answer and appreciated the private message you sent me today. I believe I thanked you for it. Why all the drama is beyond me. I have no problems with any of you. All this Internet arguing is childish. I like the days of a group of men talking and you had a disagreement you either worked it out or put up your fist. It saved all this soap opera drama for old ladies in the afternoon.

If that's true I apologize, but for the life of my I do not remember any of those additional details. As per my response, where I literally said, "Now, if you had come on and said something like "I've found these videos _______________, _______________, and _____________. What do ya'll think? Which should I go by?" That's different. You'd have both shown initiative and be asking for opinion, not spoon-feeding." I really cannot see myself saying that if you literally had stuff pointing the the contrary.

<rant>
That said, as for the bickering; there's a decent amount of folks on here that if you don't make all answers super nice and peachy they get all bent out of shape. Telling someone to Google apparently hits that nerve (although I suspect they're more taken with my response to your "why be a dick" question... but I feel I was just answering an honest question hahah). You can't criticize elements of people's builds, if something is blatantly wrong you can't say anything... etc. It's this new idea from recent decades that everyone gets a participation award. As far as I'm concerned, this lack of honesty, hand holding, spoon feeding, etc. encourages the continuance of not improving one's self/work (and people on American Idol that have been told they can sing all their life when they sound like a donkey). This ultra-PC view doesn't really do anyone any good in the long run as far as I'm concerned.
</rant>
Chris

For the record, if you ever find anything wrong with my builds, I would appreciate you pointing it out. I want to get better and better, and having somoene else's eye can be very helpful.

There's a way to say something, and a way not to.

There's valid criticism delivered responsibly, and there's feather ruffling.

There's peeing off noobs so that they leave "your" forum alone and don't clog it up with useless questions, and there's, well, going somewhere else.

Posting a video of your own making is INVITING followup questions. Telling someone to google any more information after that before annoying you with more questions is being a dick.

Answering the question "Why are you being a dick?" with a sentence starting with "Because I don't appreciate blah blah blah" is admitting being a dick.

Telling the poor guy who asked a question that it's OKAY to ask questions, that's why we're members of a forum, after being dissed, is not Hand-Holding.
