Spent two full days making a flip cart using the Kings woodworking plan. Some errors along the way but it came out good. I will most likely swap the wheels as they are not very friendly. It’s what the plan called for so I went with it.

I also botched the pin locations so ended up having to drill a set of holes for each tool. I made handles which flip depending on which tool is in use.

Looks great, Brad! I like the nook on the side for blades and such. You can’t store the nick-nacks on the part that flips!

Not in my shop, but close by. Final sanding and rounding over edges and then on to applying the finish.

Happy Holidays to everyone on the OLF.

Brad, I like the little signs so that you can tell the planer from the miter saw.:>) Just kidding. That is a very nice set up.

The fixture I use to hold a neck in the vice when I'm carving it was leaned up against the bench, tipped over, and this happened. Maybe I should put a Gibson logo on it before I glue it back together.

Craig, that is lovely!

I’m phasing out the LMI universal binding jig carrier for these. I have a few more shapes to make for the baseplates. The stanchions are swappable to whatever base I need. I experimented with magjig for this but didn’t like the results so went back to the standard threaded knob and carriage bolts.

That's a beaut!

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

Yea, I really like the combination of Indian rosewood and curly koa binding. I got a bunch of this binding some years ago from Bob Gleason of Pegasus Guitars in Hawaii. He used to produce and sell gorgeous koa binding. He even sold it in bunches that were made up of adjacent pieces all cut from the same larger piece of koa so that the color and curl was consistent. Great stuff.

Brad it might not have been fun but that is going to look wonderful.

Jay absolute love it. Does the curl make it hard to bend?

There's been no problem bending it on a bending iron for the body binding on three instruments: the one above, a dreadnought, and a parlor. The waist bend on the parlor has a radius of 1 3/4" so it's pretty tight. The binding was 0.080" thick for all three.

Bending it for soundhole binding has been a different story. I got it on the first try for the dreadnought, which has the largest soundhole diameter. The first attempt for the parlor broke, but the second one worked. For the mandocello, it took five attempts to get an intact ring. The fails are shown below. I think the difference this time was due to variability between different sets of koa binding. And, the pieces being bent for the soundhole binding are inherently fragile since they are only about 0.100" tall instead of 1/4" tall. I tried bending both with and without SSII treatment and there was no difference. I had to hold my mouth just right to get the fifth one.

I use Koa often for binding. (Wish Bob still sold it, I’m nearly out). In my learning curve of bending it, and breaking a lot, I found spraying it with water works great. Just a spritz and into the fox bender.

I have used Zpoxy, but I'm now using System Three SilverTip epoxy with the fast hardener. They've both worked for me, but Zpoxy doesn't cure properly below 70 degrees and my shop is often below that, especially this time of year. Also, SilverTip doesn't have such a strong toxic smell.
