The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

Closed the box on the next 00. Khaya & red spruce. Started experimenting with the magic probe. I’ll write up a review once I have complete the measurements.

Another flat top mandolin (number 4), again in Englemann Spruce and River Oak, with a Ziricote fingerboard. Trying a new neck attachment method, with a half depth mortise and tenon, reinforced with vertical dowels. Built a new external form with attachments for keeping the neck block aligned.

been working on a restore of a 1926 Martin 0-28. Needed a new top , lots of bad past repairs that needed attention. removed denim and fixed lots of bad crack repairs and loose braces. The back and sides are looking a lot better now . Just started the finishing process.
Its nice to put these old girls back in business. The top was replaces with vintage plywood and a paint stirring stick. I did feel a new top was in order

the fretboard as way over thinned and had to make a new one. I have it prepped for bar frets

Wow plywood and a Popsicle stick hahahah! It's amazing the work some people have done to 'restore' these old guitars. Sometimes you just use what you got. And some times it's really creative and even inventive. Are you refinishing that with Shellac John?

I received a commission from a client in Singapore about a year ago that I've just recently started building. The client in question is a bit luxury obsessed and asked me to make a rosette inspired by her pink Burberry scarf, not my usual aesthetic but I had fun making this. Each pixel is .3mm with 225 pixels per tile and 46 tiles in the rosette equalling 10,350 pieces of wood in the mosaic alone. Not quite as simple as it appears

Speaking of CNC…. made some plates today for Mr Parker. These are compatible with the LuthierTool neck angle jig and body vise. Don will add his own drill bushings to the plates to accommodate the 5/16” holes he uses for his necks.

If you have that jig and want some plates let me know. No more wobbling out holes to get alignment!

Brad is the man! Looking forward to using these plates. I could have cut them the old fashioned way, but he’s already geared up for it. Well done!

I've been trying out this glue and like it so far. High solids content. What I like best is that pieces being glued don't slide around so much. Haven't used it for any high-stress situations yet.

Those look absolutely great Brad.

Are you using a spinning engraving bit for the text and alignment lines? Or a diamond drag bit? Or something else?

I use a 90 deg diamond drag bit with the spindle off. My machine has a laser which came with a kill switch for the spindle, makes it nice as I don’t have to mess with the spindle speed.

I'm glad to see pedals being included in this thread and Hesh, nice work! They are addictive! I used to make them for fun and profit and recently went through my parts bins and organized what I had to make a large batch of a variety of circuits on perf-board, vero-board and some on pcbs I've bought from various suppliers. Here's an incomplete list of populated boards I've got going: Blackstone MOSFET Overdrive, Catalinbread, Dirty Little Secret, Katzenkonig, SFT overdrive, Mu-Tron Envelope Filter, Crowther Hotcake and Prunes and Custard, Marshall Bluesbreaker, Maestro Brass Master, DAM Ezekiel 25:17 Bass Fuzz, Zvex Fuzz Factory and Wooly Mammoth, Keeley Magnetic Echo, Diamond Optical Compressor, Skreddy Lunar Module and maybe a few Tonebenders. Lots of wiring and drilling of enclosures in my future for sure!

This summer, my woodshop has been focusing on re-doing our kitchen (walnut countertops, new farm-style sink install, making new kitchen cabinet doors, backsplashes and paint) so I've had to put away my other woodworking and pedal-making projects. Once this overhaul is done I'm getting back to a few electric guitar projects (6-string short scale bass made from a Teisco body and a Danelectro neck, Walnut double cutaway of my own design and a 3D printed Jazzmaster-ish body that needs to be assembled with the parts I've got laying around).






I also slabbed a spalted Silver Maple log and a large Elm log earlier this summer.



When I get around to building my first acoustic, I'll be finding it hard to decide which wood I want to use first from some boards I had resawn (Ziricote, Beeswing Cocobolo, Birdseye Maple, Mottled Padauk and others:

I just ordered my 5th amp kit from StewMac and this is the only one they have/offer that I have not built yet. It's a Deluxe clone and I upgraded the speaker. Thought it would make a good winter project.

On the pedal board front six pedals built so far and I'm using an all kit pedal pedal board now as my everyday board. Great stuff and a lot of fun never realized how much I enjoy electronics.

We are on vacation this week and last and I return to work at Ann Arbor Guitars Tuesday or Wednesday. Be good to be back in the saddle again I hate not being busy.

No cool stock, or amazing rosettes. I want to get my guitar and violin plans off the floor. I have had them stacked on the air filter, but sometimes they blow off. I saw in the Rockler ad that they have a folding shelf kit; and $20 off if you spend $100. So I went there and picked a set up yesterday; the sale ends tomorrow. Went in Menard's after (had some rebates, and their wood selection seems better than HD), and got pine boards 16" X 48" to glue into the table top. A 4' x 4' plastic sheet for the top, Some 1 X 2's for a frame around the clear plastic top, that will be hinged somehow so I can move the plan I'm using to the top.

The only plan that doesn't fit is the dreadnaught plan. It has to be folded in half. Some of the plans I have cut in pieces, and I might be able to just have them in one sheet. I'll have to see.

It should also make a nice drafting table for drawing up originals. Yes, I did take drafting in High School.

I glued the boards last night after planing 2 edges flat, and it looks good. This afternoon, I'll make the frame for the plastic.
