Stew Mac just published a fantastic new documentary following Michael Bashkin as he builds one of his incredible instruments. It’s about two hours long and showcases a number of approaches I know are of high interest here (like CNC, HHG, solid linings, pre-profiling braces, awesome jigs, and an incredibly well thought through and integrated build process). An absolute pleasure to watch.

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

I just finished absorbing the second half of the video - great stuff!

I’ve tried to get on the waiting list for a “Loothsaber” scribing tool with zero success. Now I want one of the nut slot square, vise gizmos at 1:41:20. Anybody know who’s making that?

Fantastic video. I'm half way through and almost want to start over!

I have searched in vain all weekend for the small scraper/hoe-shaped chisel Michael was using for glue clean up. I know I've seen that tool before but I can't for the life of me find the name. Anyone know what that's Called?

But no reason not to make your own out of a strip of steel you can bend and sharpen. You can make whatever shape you want. Doesn't have to be carbide or hardened for a small amount of scrapping.

Great video and mighty nice of Michael to offer up his techniques. AND for he and StewMac to put it out there for free!

Site just shows "information coming soon"... how did you order yours?

I'm 45 minutes into the video and that little tool is my favorite thing so far.

Edit - found a version on Lee Valley with replaceable carbide tips. Simple enough to make, and carbide inserts I've got.

I had the SM, sold it when I got a Summit.
Then got the SM deluxe, which I prefer to the Summit.

I've only started to watch the video, but I'm already intrigued by his method for shooting the top and back plates (4:03) where he passes the plates past the plane which is clamped in a fixed position. He's using a No. 7 plane. Has anyone here tried that approach?

It's actually pretty common,I have done it in the past but now use my 3HP 12" jointer....
