I've got a Mexican strat in front of me. The truss rod nut which is recessed at the headstock seems to be stripped. I think someone was using a 4mm hex key in a 3/16" socket. Any tricks on removing these once they're stripped? I'll try a flat head screw driver after I talk to the client if he wants me to try and get it out.

Sonic screwdriver?

Seriously, good luck. However you get it out is fine with me, but afterwards is another kettle of fish.

An easy out got it loose and out. I had a garbage neck lying around I cut the head off of and stole the nut from the truss rod, a little time with some diamond files and the drill press brought the diameter down on the outside of the replacement nut. Slid it into the hole, it grabbed the threads and away we go.

Good to know. I was afraid you'd have to remove the dark plug to get the nut out. I was going to propose having to remove it before using the easy out.

Is it strange that the most satisfying part of that repair, was the opportunity to destroy the garbage neck, ultimately closing the book on its possibilities and sending it to the scrap heap? So many random things accumulate simply because maybe I'll need them one day.

You didn't really toss it? I keep such stuff..... just in case. Everything is raw material, you know.

We are the kind of people who keep sawdust in boxes, labeled by species.

It got to move from the shelf that holds random things I don't know what to do with but mean to find a place for some day, to the rubbermaid of scrap hardwood that might be useful one day. There's still a truss rod inside it so its not quite garbage...

heres what i do. if it is not a double action TR, i use the correct 3/16" allen but make sure its disposable!! now go get some JB weld. mix your jb weld up cover the end of the disposable 3/16 allen in mixed jb weld but not so much that it will go everywhere inside the TR slot. install the jb weld allen into the stripped allen head of the TR. let it sit over night. in the morning, reverse the truss rod all the way out. replace the TR nut/bolt and YEE-HAW as they say back home!
