Hello you all…I used to hang around here 10 or so years ago…I’m looking forward to seeing how many oldies are still about and mayhaps making a few new acquaintances…after these years, I find myself missing something…so yes, it’s in my blood…only difference is now instead of a barn for a workshop, I have what I consider a micro shop…8’ x 14’…
Very few stationary power tools that I used to enjoy…today I thinned my sides using a handheld belt sander and a hand plane…My humidity is hovering around 19% so I can’t do much as far as wood shaping…I had a few of my old implements such as the mold of my favorite shape…bracing pattern…I even had a 12 fret neck and fingerboard all slotted up from the old shop…with an inlayed headstock…
So this is going to be a slow project punctuated by life getting in the way…currently we got a fire on the outskirts of town so who knows what the future holds…
Well I’m hopeful that a few of my old friends are still around and that I’ll make a few new ones this time…
Cheers y’all…

Nice to see you on here! I have a story to share about your luthiery John.

I first heard about your wonderful little parlors back when I was a young buck just really digging into playing at the ripe age of 18 (I'm 32 now). I had bought and traded a few other loothy built guitars before I settled in on wanting one of yours. Had some tragedies happen in life so I was extremely poor. And by the time I had saved up enough money for one of your Roots guitars (it took me 3 years) you were making at that time I read on your website about how you werent building anymore. I was saddened by that but I never forgot how badly I wanted one of your little parlors. Now that I build I have even more respect for you for building what (at that time) was not the most popular style of guitar.

Hope you stay safe from the fire. Just wanted to share that story with you.

Good to have you back John.

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

Well if your avitar is any indicator of your abilites, then I'm very happy to have you back as well. I was here back then but I don't recall you but I wasn't building guitars back then, just repairing.

This humidity business . So long as the wood has been acclimated to local conditions, and the instrument is going to stay near where it's built, is there really a problem?

Glad to hear you are back at it. 19%? Wow that's low. I'm guessing you must live in a desert.

Welcome back. I always admired your instruments and was particularly enamored of the "aged" finishes you created. Tried my hand at it a few times, with mixed results.

Sounds good in theory but you really have no idea where it might live in the future.

Hi John,
They just don't understand the Sierra foothills weather patterns, do they? Pleased to meet you.
Hope that Bridge Fire stays down to where they can keep a handle on it....
Carl

That bridge fire was about 4 miles away…but CalFire jumped on it quick and with gusto! It was even closer to the local CalFire HQ…But yes middle California is very nearly desert like in humidity of late though it’s starting to get a bit towards normal…

Just working in the shop today replacing some fixtures that I let go when I thought I was done with making…

Cheers!
