As I'm getting close to doing the finish on my guitar, I'm thinking about the Avanti sprayer from HF. I don't expect a perfect finish of the gun and I'm using EM6000 for the finish. One good thing I can think of is I won't need a giant noisy compressor. I want to spray this in my basement with a window fan running. I really want to get away from nitro, as much as I love the results, I just don't want to do it anymore. So this sprayer is only $85 and has good reviews from the fence and wall painters. Am I going to be the first one to try this on a guitar? Anyone else?

I'm also considering a $50 badger synthetic brush.

I've never used it personally, but have also considered it myself.. That said, I look forward to seeing your results!
I bought a $16 Harbor Freight HVLP gun that I use with my larger compressor and it works great spraying EM6000, but like you said, the compressor is large and mine is very loud.

I noticed one of the reviews said there was a lack of width adjustment causing excessive overspray. I wonder how adjustable the spray pattern would be on it, or if would even be much of an issue?

I saw that as well. Not sure what to make of that.

I looked up "Avanti HF sprayer" and I see there are two different sprayers with the moniker - one a hand held unit, and one used for painting out of a bucket.
Still, you might be better off with the $99 PC pancake compressor and cheap HF jamb gun. It doesn't take much time or air to spray a guitar and a good set of ear muffs goes a long way towards noise abatement. Small portable compressors are handy for other things around the shop.
If you do go with the HF sprayer let us know how it works out. I have one of their cheap turbine sprayers and it works o.k. to squirt stain on decks and outdoor furniture, and actually a friend of mine who is a professional finisher uses his for small jobs (cabinets) when he doesn't feel like using his pro unit.
How did Warwick make out in this latest storm? When I was a kid I lived in (I think the lowest part) of Island Park and we had to deal with storm surge on a couple of occasions.

I already have a pancake compressor and guns that I used for spraying lack. I just want to simplify things. Warwick didn't get much of a storm thankfully.

I've lived here all my life and never heard of Island park.

I found it, it's in Portsmouth, RI on the other side of Narragansett Bay.

About compressors...I just received a quiet Makita compressor - - - 58db. No reason for hearing protectors and irritating everybody in the house. I have a Porter-Cable pancake compressor and it makes a wake-the-graveyard racket.

That sounds good Peter, I still like the idea of just plugging in the gun and the noise stops when you release the trigger. It's probably just a pipe dream like waterborne lacquer but I can't find anyone in the world that's done it. I hate to be the guinea pig.

I've applied Enduro Var with cheap disposable foam brushes and that has worked O.K.. It is quiet and there is no overspray to contend with.

I may try that but right now, I have a fresh can of em6000 I want to try. I brushed it on a test piece and it seemed to be OK but I need a better brush or a spray system I'm happy with. I've considered building a box like a doghouse outside my basement to keep the compressor in with a remote switch. Maybe I wouldn't hate it so much. If I could get it done with a brush, that would be ideal but I know that's going to mean extra sanding. I will miss the smell of nitro.

Did you use a foam brush? I've had several people tell me that cheap foam brushes work as good as expensive varnish brushes, so that is what I used. With Enduro Var I could brush on several coats before level sanding. I would brush on 3+ coats one day, level sand the next morning, then brush on a couple more coats. I've never used EM 6000 so I don't know how it would compare.

I used a nylon brush for my test piece, it was pretty stiff. I'd like to get a good brush before I try it again, not foam. Now I'm thinking about foam brushes. If the foam pores are well filled with finish, maybe there wouldn't be any air bubbles. I'm also wondering if hitting the freshly painted surface with a heat gun would help. Back to the laboratory.

I've never tried that HF sprayer or tried spraying a guitar with any airless sprayer but I have an old Wagner airless and a small Makita compressor and if noise is a consideration, I'd go with the compressor any day. It's true that the noise stops when you release the trigger on the airless gadget but when its on - aye aye aye! Maybe the makers have conquered the noise since I got mine. Hope so.
