Wow. Turned out very very nice. How does it sound?

I’m going to record a short video this weekend. It’s actually got a nice full sound, warm really, with surprising sustain considering the top material and the X brace.

Definitely not as bright as spruce topped instruments of the same size.

Beautiful uke! Really nice ziricote, very landscapey. The finish looks great and it sounds great too. It's really cool that ukuleles can built with such a wide range of top woods and still sound very good.

I was wondering about that beard. I don't remember you having one when you were out here in Seattle and came to an SLG meeting.

I showed the videos to my wife yesterday. We went to an art fair the other day, and the part that she liked best was eating lunch watching, and listening to a couple of guys from Brazil playing a violin and a uke!
She, and I both like the look and sound. She noticed how clean and neat your workshop is. I tend to not put things away; a bit opposite there.
I didn't realize that the low string was high. You could notice that watching you play. The one I'm making now will be an 8 string, so it will be low. It is really a baroque guitar, but strung as a uke.
The x brace worked.

Thanks, Jay! I would not be inclined to try such a dense top again. It has its own unique voice but it sacrificed a bit in complexity and sustain. I do like the sound, but it's different.

Thanks, Ken! Looking forward to seeing your 8 string. I'm working on a baritone now, I haven't fully decided on how I will string it yet, might be simple 4 strings since it's the first one, but not re-entrant for sure, I like the low G. I did a low G tenor uke a while back in cocobolo. It recently went to it's forever home but prior to that it was my favorite instrument to play.

Looking and sounding good brad!

Tonaly, what are you comparing it to? One of my earlier concerts, I used rosewood all around. It was a very low density piece however. I always loved the tone, warm rich, and balanced. Volume was a little sacrificed however. Comparing that to all my other builds which were all hardwood tops, Koa and mahogany.

Two exceptions were spruce and cedar tops which I did not care for at all. Could have been another factors, but spruce was plenty loud, not very rich. Cedar was warm, but just sort of weak.

Hey Pat!

You are right, I’m comparing to other mahogany & spruce top ukes I’ve built. I too have been saying this one is very mellow. Words are hard here of course.

It does suffer in the sustain and projection / volume category, but it has a pickup so that can be overcome.

The best sounding (to me) ukes I’ve built so far are mahogany top. I’m building with koa for the first time now and have high hopes for it.

Overall I’m happy with how this one turned out. It’s got a unique voice for sure.
