I got around the resawing this set of spalted maple today. Which do you prefer? Bonus points if you know both references.

I'd slip the joint at glue up so that the right side drops down on Castiel to line up some of the patterns

Castiel. You can also move it get more spalt into the outline.

I'll be contrary and go with Daryl. I think it better reflects the angel wings motif. The other way round reminds me of zombies clawing their way up from the fiery pits of eternal damnation ... or something.

Either way, it's cool looking wood.

I like Daryl, especially if you move the wood down (or the template up) so the peak in the center of the pattern is centered at the waist.

OK I can find Castiel and Daryl on the Internet.

Do you build any larger patterns? You seem to be losing a lot of pretty wood.

It doesn’t quite fit a 00 width wise.

I can’t really put a strip in or anything to try to buy some space.

The set is long enough for up to a dred, just no width.

Ideas?

Taper the center seam on the Castiel pattern to bring the wing tips closer together and they would still be on the upper bout.

If you're doing an angel theme, give it some inlays in seraphinite

How much too narrow is it? If you use the Daryl configuration, maybe you could weedle out another half inch by using a partial wedge just in the lower half. Glue a piece of the wedge wood to each panel, then cut the new angle and join (the wedge will have a joint up its center). The spalt pattern will be changed a little due to cutting away some of the top middle, but perhaps for the better since you'll get more of the outer "wing edges" into the guitar outline. And of course you only need to reach the inner edge of the binding, unless you're doing an unbound back.

Maybe no wedge, but wings?

I like Daryl, also it looks like good wood in the center bout so you can have an active back.

I wonder if you really want to use this for a solid back — laminated, maybe. The stability of wood is compromised by the spalting and there will be increased movement along those lines that will telegraph through any film finish. Ask how I know.

CA might penetrate well enough to stabilize the wood, but the colour changes of the maple might not be to your liking. Testing is essential. My experience is that epoxy does’t really accomplish much.

Personally, I relegate spalted wood to rosettes, head plates, drop tops and other ornamentation.
