That didn't work out so well on the backstrap. That's a long cut and I fugged it up to the point where I want to either route either route side of my inlay and add more wood or just fill with rosewood dust. Can't make up my mind. Since ther's no staining involved I'm inclined to think filling is appropriate.

Do you have any offcuts from the back when the plate was trimmed? I would think a channel as wide as that filled with just sawdust might look bad. If you can get something at least close inlaid in there and hide just the gaps with dust it could be ok.

Any pics? Others with more experience might have some interesting ideas.

I have the martin style backstrip installed. It just has some nasties along the edges. I'll get a photo tonight. Get to try out my new phone camera.

Cool. I think I misread your initial post though. I thought you were proposing routing the entire strip out and filling with dust.

What you are actually saying is widen the channel a bit and inlay some wood or dust just in the gap, correct? If so, yeah maybe the sawdust alone would be ok. Depends on how wide the gap is.

Yes, I have a feeling the dust will be okay and if not, then I can route the edges and inlay some contrasting wood beside the strip.

Just be aware that routing across a glue line is usually fine, but routing along a long glue line can muck up the router bit with glue, which burns the wood. It depends on the glue, etc., but I have had that happen to me, particularly with small bits.

Glue and sawdust is not an appropriate filler except for the smallest of voids. Under finish, it will stand out and look very shoddy.

Is there enough width outside the pattern that, if necessary, you could cut out the backstrip, re-join the plates, and re-install the back strip (might need a new backstrip)?

You might be able to make a scratch stock and "scratch" a small trench on either side of the back strip to inlay a couple of purfling lines.
