The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

I don’t know how big they are but I’ve liked the stuff I got from American Tonewood. They cut red spruce in “by god West Virginia” :D :D

It is a phrase born of the frustration of a Mountaineer who was mistaken for a resident of the Old Dominion. If you want to get somebody around here riled up, refer to them as being from Virginia. It's a "hold my beer" moment. :D

The Hampton brothers (Nathan 29, and Matt 28) fit the description. They have one part time protege, and their dad, a retired elementary school teacher, helps out some. Call/text Matt (606-627-4873) or message them on Facebook or Ebay. No website yet.
They have a large stock of WbgV and high elevation NC red spruce (as well as a plethora of other domestic and imported tonewoods).

I see you've already purchased tops but wanted to sing my praises for the Hampton Bros as well! Matt's excellent to deal with and has a great sense of humor (all of my packages have a hilarious company name).
