Yup exactly. I've got ten big restoration projects and 3 build projects going on at the moment and this is only my side job, part time. But yes for others it's a good idea to do things like make 50 necks, join tops and backs, make bridges and so on...

Let's differentiate between treating the threat the virus represents seriously and the mass media's endless fits of histrionics and associated drama to boost their sagging ratings. The threat is real for everyone, while the 24/7 infotainment hysteria is simply self-serving...if you want your COVID-19/Wuhan Virus updates unbaked and un-faked, consult the CDC and your state's infectious disease office.

- If you have serious underlying health issues (hypertension, respiratory issues, elderly and infirm, etc.), The Wuhan Vurus may represent a serious health risk...now is the time to limit contacts, hunker down, and ride out the next few weeks until the infection rates stabilize and the impact on the US's reasonably flexible healthcare delivery network is understood. Take the guidance on avoiding infection seriously, and provision for quarantine and supply chain disruptions (as you should have been doing well before reading this).

- If you are in generally good health, you should minimize your chances of infection by the usual methods - hand washing, etc. Based on the extensive testing done in South Korea, infections range from relatively mild fever and few other symptoms to a full-blown 2 week chest flu. If you are infected, the chances of complications are higher for this virus than what we commonly see, so worth paying closer attention to the progress of your illness than you might with a cold or flu. Paradoxically, the fact that both seasonal flu and the Wuhan Virus infections may be asymptomatic make those individuals more like to conduct their day as if they are well, thus spreading the disease.

- Death rates are likely over-estimated due to lack of early test data of general populations, but based on what South Korea (much higher test rate than any other country) is seeing, closer to 0.8% mortality rate versus the 2 percent seen in what is likely the worst case scenario - Communist China's apparently quite brittle rationed healthcare delivery system. Death rates from the seasonal flu average closer to 0.1%, but we have seen rates of up to 2.5% mortality in seasonal flu (e.g., Spanish Influenza of 1918) , with US fatalities over the last few decades of between about 20,000 and 58,000.

- Delaying needed health care because you are afraid of contracting the virus (or seasonal flu) should be discussed with your health care provider, rather than an infotainment anchorperson or TV doctor.

The new Coronavirus may not show sign of infection for many days. How can one know if he/she is infected? By the time they have fever and/or cough and go to the hospital, the lung is usually 50% Fibrosis and it's too late.

Taiwan experts provide a simple self-check that we can do every morning. Take a deep breath and hold your breath for more than 10 seconds. If you complete it successfully without coughing, without discomfort, stiffness or tightness, etc., it proves there is no Fibrosis in the lungs, basically indicates no infection. In critical time, please self-check every morning in an environment with clean air.

Serious excellent advice by Japanese doctors treating COVID-19 cases: Everyone should ensure your mouth & throat are moist, never dry. Take a few sips of water every 15 minutes at least. Why? Even if the virus gets into your mouth, drinking water or other liquids will wash them down through your throat and into the stomach. Once there, your stomach acid will kill all the virus. If you don't drink enough water more regularly, the virus can enter your windpipe and into the lungs. That's very dangerous. Please send and share this with family and friends. Take care everyone and may the world recover from this Coronavirus soon.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT - CORONAVIRUS
1. If you have a runny nose and sputum, you have a common cold
2. Coronavirus pneumonia is a dry cough with no runny nose.
3. This new virus is not heat-resistant and will be killed by a temperature of just 26/27 degrees. It hates the Sun.
4. If someone sneezes with it, it takes about 10 feet before it drops to the ground and is no longer airborne.
5. If it drops on a metal surface it will live for at least 12 hours - so if you come into contact with any metal surface - wash your hands as soon as you can with a bacterial soap.
6. On fabric it can survive for 6-12 hours. normal laundry detergent will kill it.
7. Drinking warm water is effective for all viruses. Try not to drink liquids with ice. 8. Wash your hands frequently as the virus can only live on your hands for 5-10 minutes, but - a lot can happen during that time - you can rub your eyes, pick your nose unwittingly and so on.
9. You should also gargle as a prevention. A simple solution of salt in warm water will suffice.
10. Can't emphasis enough - drink plenty of water!

THE SYMPTOMS
1. It will first infect the throat, so you'll have a sore throat lasting 3/4 days
2. The virus then blends into a nasal fluid that enters the trachea and then the lungs, causing pneumonia. This takes about 5/6 days further.
3. With the pneumonia comes high fever and difficulty in breathing.
4. The nasal congestion is not like the normal kind. You feel like you're drowning. It's imperative you then seek immediate attention.

My personal opinion aligns pretty well with Woody's post, and JF's earlier post makes a good point about the lives that might be saved by the hysteria.
But, all in all it's reminding me of Y2K for those who remember that.

So Lyme disease didn't start in Old Lyme, Connecticut? West Nile virus started in Kentucky, right? Ebola virus started near the Chicago River, not the Ebola in Zaire? Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever originated in Rio De Janeiro?

Also, last I checked - Wuhan is not a race. So, yeah - it's the WUHAN VIRUS because it originated there. Long medical tradition, okay?

I remember Y2K. I was too lazy to do any prepping for it. I figured I could catch enough fish and snapping turtles And find enough "greens" to where I wouldn't go hungry. Make Euell Gibbons proud! And there is enough deadfall around to burn and stay warm.

I do however think the virus does represent a real threat for many of us and should not be taken too lightly. The University of Delaware is about 25 miles from me and has a large number of Chinese students. I anticipated someone would have the virus sooner or later. Today it was reported a Professor there was the first case in Delaware.

Correct. The name of the virus is SARS-CoV-2 which stands for "severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2"

The disease is named COVID-19 which stands for "coronavirus disease 2019".

The long standing tradition of the scientific community of naming viruses after locations or animals by the scientist(s) who discovered them was officially abandoned by the scientific community five years ago and a new process was established within the scientific community for naming newly discovered viruses. That's where the name SARS-CoV-2 came from, unlike "Wuhan virus" which came solely from the media. The same media that people are so fond of trashing and calling fake news because they are unreliable and not credible. But, suddenly, when it comes to using a fake name for the virus, the media have somehow become a reliable and credible source. Funny how that works.

I think in the long run, for most Americans, in good health and not too old, contracting the Corona virus is on the lower end of the life as was know it, threatening scale. Take a look at the stock market and what is happening all around us. The supply chain ifrom overseas has all but dried up, Ports of entry have no boats to unload. They have begun laying off. The tourist industry has been knocked onto its heels. Places like churches, sporting events meetings, etc, are increasingly being banned. A few now, but watch out. Schools are closing, many businesses will soon follow. The NBA just canceled the remainder of the season. It goes on and on, and things are just getting started.

Most will survive the virus but the economic disaster that is being rolled out to slow it? Maybe not.

Yup. That terminology is being used by a specific triabalist group of people in this country for a very specific reason that I won't go into here due to forum rules. I just thought I would point that out because sometimes people don't know and get caught up in it.

Living in a college town with a PHD wife who works at the university and has several Chinese students who have already told her that they heard people telling them to 'go back home' and 'get out of my country' puts it into perspective for me.

The supply chain issues are exposing stuff I didn't know like how a large number of our critical life saving drugs and medical devices and equipment are manufactured overseas in places like China and India.

This interview of a well known infectious specialist from the University of Minnesota, my home state is long but good. This is definitely a big deal and has the potential to be the biggest lifestyle disrupter in most of our lifetimes.

The funny thing is that's it's not actually the virus that is such a big deal, as it is people's panic reactions to it...

What I see is people not panicking about the virus, but reacting to people who ARE panicking. I'll never understand that lemming mindset.

Man is this guy desperate. And a drunk driver too.

I don't see people panicking, just taking steps to survive. A panic would be riots and looting and such.

The big issues to me are supply chain. Look at what happened after the Puerto Rico hurricane. Turns out nearly 100% of the normal saline for hospitals was remanufactured there. The plant was destroyed and no more saline. Take a look at a hospital crash cart. All the drugs are generic with parts or all of the drugs manufactoed in China or India. The electronic industry is the same.

The examples go on and on. The modern world is not ready for a pandemic.

So yes it is hyped however YES....It does have the potential to be serious. Simply because you’re removed from something doesn’t mean it isn’t a threat. I personally know someone in the hospital NOW who is positive and is currently on a breathing vent because of this crap.
She’s early 50s and not in terrible shape or elderly.

Just be cautious. Nobody here wants to spend 2 weeks or more in isolation in a hospital room.
I’m hoping nature curbs this someway.

Understand I’m not implying those who panic are stupid or those who claim it’s all hype are wrong either... I don’t know. I DO know that my local hospital is reporting double the number of people each day.

I think one of the differences that doctors are worried about in regards to flu vs Covid is that the flu has a vaccine and a lot of people are already vaccinated against it.
