Are we talking about delignified/densified guitar soundboards? The next big thing to supplant torrification? Somebody is going to have to come up with a catchy name for it.

Kinda what I was thinking....

but the thicknesses they talk about are insane! A wooden speaker cone 8.5 microns thick. That's .00033"!!!

Wentao Gan has done research on a number of unusual wood technologies along with a number of other Chinese scholars. Although the research is done in the U.S. it's hard to say how much of it will stay here.
The process outlined in the article (removing lignin and hemicellulose and roasting and compressing the matrix) seems like they are trying for a non oil based carbon fiber substitute. I don't think you will see it used in guitars any time soon, but it might be a way to make a louder banjo! laughing6-hehe

I agree Clay.... I have told people for decades that wood is mother natures carbon fiber.

Using the natural carbon lattice provided by the cell structure but replacing all the resins in the wood with something more stable and resistant to cold flow under stress and pressure. Not at a nano scale but at closer to conventional guitar top thicknesses.... Now this sounds very interesting to me!

While we all think about improving musical instruments, this might be some kind of research for the medical field. To me , it would seem they would take the research in the direction of repairing broken eardrums (typanoplasty/myringoplasty) $0.50 words I looked up.
