Just got a new bottle of titebond, and was confused with the code for dating it looked like it had changed.
Checked on the net, sure enough, found this post

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

I always applied a piece of tape with the date that I purchased the bottle.... Tossed it when it was a year old.

I use the date of manufacture, write it on the bottle, and don't use it for critical joints after a year from that date.
For non-lutherie purposes like jigs and outside molds stop when empty or if it goes "funny"

But then what would they do with all the old bottles of glue? For non critical applications old glue still works fine, as long as it hasn't gone funky. If everyone knows the bottles are dated they might attach some significance to that rather than just grabbing the first bottle off the shelf.
I'm just glad they do put a "born on date" code on the bottle for those of us that want to know that.

Ah I see. You have to be in the know. Kind of like reaching for the milk bottle all the way in the back. Smart grocers would know to but the new ones up front

I removed yet another titebond creeped bridge in the past couple days. They come through often enough. Amazing how they can slide!

I had my wife pick up a 16 oz. bottle of titebond for me from Home Depot (this old hermit hates to leave the hollow). When I looked it over I didn't see any date code printed on it. One article I read said if your retailer removes the code, to buy it elsewhere. Is the code easily removed? The bottle didn't appear to have any inner seal and had glue up in the tip. I usually buy the gallon so I don't know if this is normal or not. The glue appeared useable, but not particularly fresh. Has anyone else run into bottles with no date code?
