The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

Beautiful burst. What dyes did you use? It looks like amber and mission brown. Any black at all? Just gorgeous!

I'll have to claw this back from the owner for some sound clips. Shouldn't be too difficult. I'll bring it back in for a check up and some better photos.



It's actually a slight widening at the waist and lower bout. Totally a personal preference. I feel the old parlor and 00s just feel tight in the waist and not flowing into the lower bout. I'll have to grab the GAL plans and overlay them. I actually used a Collins a little bit as a guide.


All the binding was masked, along with the rosette. Color scheme is Colortone Yellow as a light base across everything. Followed about a 60:40 mix of Vintage Amber (not sure they even have that any more to Medium Brown. Across everything, but very light in the middle of the body, and the start of the fade. Then Medium brown for the edges blending into the body. I followed it all with a light coat of the Amber/Med Brown. Scrape back everything that's not supposed to be colored. I had to scrape the back strip, I'd mask it next time. I learned to mix all of my dyes a lot darker than I expect, and to thin the nitro about 50%. That way it's pretty much color going on and burning in and I don't end up with a thick coat of color. My Iwata spray gun is fantastic for this! Well worth the investment.

I really wish I sprayed a lot more guitars so I could get the "recipe" down.

That is outstanding! Was the sunburst right off the gun? I ask because when I was building mandolins I used a mostly rubbed technique followed with just a little spray.

Yes. Shot completely with my Iwata LPH80 mini-gun with a 1.2 tip and E4 spray cap. Great gun for a non-production shop. Works well with a smaller compressor, but you can get great atomization, and spray as light or wet as you need. I tried a hand rubbed burst once and never felt I could get the color deep enough. I've seen some hand rubbed bursts that look great. It does give a bit more of the color variation that can add to the look of a burst.
