Two quick suggestions. Sorry if they are duplicates of above somewhere.
1) what is the headstock angle to the fretboard?
2) does the D string contact, or almost almost contact, the wood of the headstock as it goes into the tuner roller opening? Is it possible the string is vibrating against the headstock there?

bionata... Thanks for the suggestions. Yes, i am also trying to determine if there is something else vibrating. The Chladni pattern testing suggestion is an interesting one, i wonder if it would show up somewhere... or if it would show up on something like audacity software... and even if it does, how do you narrow it down? I have tried damping various parts... just haven't found the correct spot yet i think.

ProfChris.. same comment i think. I need to just try to isolate it.

I think i will try to take it to a local repair guy that helped me with my last issue, then to the next NEL meeting. then fire wood (LOL).

Rob

a great THANK YOU to all who have responded. it's really appreciated!!

- the headstock is at 9 degrees, which i know some say is low, but it is the same as my first acoustic guitar which turned out awesome. I am less inclined (pun intended) to think thats an issue.

- Yes, i kept the same shape of the headstock as my steel string which is different from any classical i have seen. it narrows at the center two tuners and causes an issue where the "D" string does contact the side if I am not careful. I have damped that portion of the string though and am fairly confident that it is not the issue. BUT i think i will move the D string to the B position and see if the issue remains. I previously moved it to the G position but i should have the same issue with touching the side there, so i need to be a bit more sure. i don't think i have the issue with the G string itself.

Go over the entire guitar trying to gently flex the wood, looking for a soft spot that indicates an unglued brace. Rap the guitar all over with you knuckles, listening for a crack or unglued part buzz. Do this with the guitar strung up as a crack can be open and buzzing when strung up but closed up and unnoticeable unstrung.

I would also check the fit of the bolt on neck. Now that the guitar has been strung up a while, are the bolts still tight? Figure out what wood is actually touching other wood in there. If you firmly try to flex the neck joint can you feel a "crick" in the joint? Make sure the end block is strongly glued all around.

A thread on the MIMF that may have some similarities to your problem, maybe?
Lots of replies. Good luck.

update: taken me a real long time to get anywhere on this, but i have not given up. I have tried many things, refretted with lower frets, opened the back and put ca on all the braces, made a new nut and saddle ( actually a couple of saddles, trying different angles. increased and decreased saddle height. On another thread, Al Carruth suggested that i made the top too responsive that it was picking up secondary vibrations from windings of the strings and when i checked the top i indeed did go way to far with aggressive sanding and had brought sections down to 1.5 mm. so i have pulled the top and made a new top and have glued it all back together. Not sure if i will string her up tomorrow, but maybe later in the day... any way, i am hopeful that this was the problem.

I have just finished my first classical, my second guitar all around and first guitar done solo. The problem i am fighting is an odd double tone on the D string. sounds more like a harmonic than it does a buzz, and it's noticeable even when played open. There's a slight amount of the same on the A string as well.

I hope your problem goes away with the new top. If not then it is the neck.
You said you had no trussrod, Did you put any reinforcement? Like a carbon fiber rod or the like?
I think it could be that vibrating under the A and D strings.
