You might excise the embossed serial number with an exacto knife and inlay it into the new backstrap. It's not in a stressed location.

Conor - if it's yours and not a clients, do what you like to make it cool. Experiment, or just find a way to show off. It's not like you're ruining an old Martin or Gibson. Then..... play the heck out of it!

A customer brought something similar to me. An old ovation with a gorilla glued neck. Just glopped all over the poor thing. It was just not worth it to even try to get it apart.

I stripped the parts and was going to chuck it, but wife said she wanted to make something out of it. So it sat in the garage for three years until I finally got rid of it and a few others she was going to make into something.

Well, a little over a year later and I've finished although not without adventures.

My backstrap came out way too far. The mahogany is a pretty different color, I bought some African assuming a cheap guitar like this would probably have been the same, but the original neck was much redder. I took way too much off the face, and ended up having to take the fret board off to correct that. But I'm pretty happy with a first attempt. I learned a ton.
