So glad this worked out for you - what lovely wood! With sanding and scraping allowances, it sounds like you'll easily get 0.075" sides and 0.085" back sets after joining.

I think you may have just obligated yourself to a very photo-rich L-0 construction thread!

I can still say good things about Exotic Wood Zone, at least when it comes to East Indian Rosewood. I think that is their wheelhouse. Good quality at prices that fluctuate a LOT, so you have to watch their eBay store if you want to catch them at their lowest prices. They do sell orphaned sides of East Indian Rosewood.

I recently bought a bit of ebony from them, and it looks good, too. But I do think that their EIR is the best deal they offer (when they are in a low price mood).

I had a similar scenario; except I paid for my billet.
At the time, I had neither the skill or saw to cut up my purchase so I took it to a local shop with a decent reputation.
They ended up cutting the pieces a bit thicker because they did not want to be responsible for the loss of any wood (As per Bri).
At .200+, there certainly was an extra slice in there but live and learn.
Fast-forward to present, I have the saw now but still not the courage to cut something that nice.

How long since that wood had been cut to the pictures. I am really interested to see what the final colors will be on mine. The original pictures show very dark after it had sat undisturbed for a long while.

Hey Ed,
So this is old coco, but i have heard experienced builders say old coco is quite similar to braz.
While I dont have a lot of experience cutting, we know most coco darkens over time.
This wood was cut about 4-5 years ago. Along with the rest of my wood, its kept in a cool dry place without much light.
Your slices seem to exhibit the same "fresh" bright cut as well.
My guess is that it will darken again.

In my experience with rosewoods, the oilier they are the more they darken over time. Cocobolo seems to darken more than most. Some of the BRW veneer I have, still has a bright orange color, and was probably cut 60 years ago. I use my nose to distinguish the different rosewoods as they can vary a lot in color and look very similar to each other. Below is some old BRW veneer.

A great find! But I have a question about how this will fit in with CITES regulations. I have a little Brazillion Rosewood that I bought around 30 years ago. what is left is cut for fretboards. Of course I have no proof that is was bought so long ago, so how does one handle old wood?

The way I will handle it is to never approach an international border with my guitar in hand.

CITES mostly limits the the import and export of materials between countries. I still see BRW for sale on eBay, not sure how much of it is documented of if it needs to be for sale within our borders.

The subject wood is very likely Brazilian rather than cocobolo, based on density (coco is significantly denser on average), smell (double Dutch chocolate brownies with bittersweet chocolate chips baking in a medium oven), and freshly milled sawdust color (coco is characteristically orange/yellow initially, BRW is russet brown to dark chocolate).

The sawyer is doing the definitive coco versus BRW test today (heartwood extractives fluorescence test), and has promised to pass along the results.

Neither of the two samples from the resaw work show any fluorescence (shavings from offcut soaked in 120 degree F distilled water for 3 hours; fine sawdust in distilled water, soaked in 120 deg F distilled water for three hours). East Indian, Amazonian, Madagascar, Kingwood, cocobolo, and Honduran rosewoods all show water extract fluorescence, so increasingly unlikely that what Mr. Minch had resawn was anything other than BRW.

I would think that there is a good chance that after an initial settling of the color it will retain most of the orange- brown hues under a finish - which I find generally more attractive than the dark browns cocobolo often becomes.

To be clear, maybe I'm reading too much into it, but i was not bringing into question the species Woodie.
Looks like braz to me.
When I said "this is coco", i was referring to the pictures of my billet that I had cut... it is coco.
Sorry if i was muddying the waters.
