I think I will keep looking for a "certified" explosion proof fan. Image how stupid I would feel sitting on a puffy cloud in heaven playing my harp guitar...

Are you sure you won't be playing hot licks at a different venue? laughing6-hehe

Safety is always a good thing to keep in mind. I don't know how reliable the information was in the add, but from a purely "will this move enough air" point of view it could work for a small spray booth.

What you want is a fan with a name brand, capacitor start motor that is at least 1/3 hp, and it should be rated TEFC (totally enclosed, fan cooled). This will move a serious amount of air and it the heart of an explosion proof system. If you want the wiring and switches to be XP rated then you have to use sealed conduit and metal enclosures(boxes) that can contain explosive forces. Not cheap.

You'll want a motor with TEXP or XPRF rating. TEFC is not considered explosion proof.

Now that was what I was looking for. Using that, I found this:

There are louvers for it too

I was lucky enough to find a new spraybooth fan at a great price.
Graingers used to sell off their open box/returned/ damaged goods and a friend of mine would buy lots from them.
The explosion proof motor cost me around $ 500. from Graingers, though....

Brad, that is very interesting! That one for $1175 looks perfect. Heck, the Jenny fan alone will get close to that price.

I thought so too, I’m going to revisit the spray booth situation in the summer so will let you know if I go this route.

Well, I am building a shop... so I am researching now. I meant the 1175 one not the smallest one. 48" wide external. My only concern is they do not list as explosion proof. They use NFPA standards (also not listed). This needs to be Class I, Group 4 (acetone and the like)

Their pricing is weird. Why would 48" be only $100 more than 30"?

It's got the same fan so the extra cost is just a bit of sheet metal.

Mike, I'm leaning toward building my own filter bank and enclosure and using this (or something in a similar price range): https://www.industrialfansdirect.com/co ... s/sd12-xpf

Once I started trying to lay out space for a "booth", even the small one had an imposing footprint. I'm thinking of making an enclosure just big enough to do what I need to do for spraying.

My spray booth is small, about 5' x 4' and I only do 1 guitar at a time. It is only enclosed on three sides. The fan pulls air through 3 furnace filters to exhaust out of a vent on the roof. I use a Dayton 1/4 hp, 12" explosion proof exhaust fan and it pushes 1150 cfm at 0.0static pressure (i.e. no restrictions). The fan costs over $1000 new but I got it for around $200 on ebay. I vent through a 10 ft x 12" flex duct so my actual cfm is going to be lower than the 1150 rating.

I bring this up because I don't think a smaller fan would work very well; maybe a useful data point for the OP?

Would a grain dryer fan work for a spray booth.
It's what I think of first when we talk about explosion proof fan.
I'm not planning on putting in a spray booth and certainly not recommending a grain dryer fan for a spray booth just curious.

Some people just use a box fan. I believe most use induction motors which are relatively non sparking. I'm not saying it's safe, I'm just saying it's done.

Thanks Brad, it works good for what I do. Biggest downside (maybe it's an upside?) is I have to clean the shop before I do any significant finish work since the booth is open on one side.

You mention 0 static pressure... do you find you need to open a door / window or does it just suck air out of the main space and it’s returned through normal leaks, etc... in the building (not sure if it’s your home or not)?

There's enough air leaking into the shop that I don't have to open a door or window but you can definitely tell that the fan is on if you try to open the door. Fan works better, of course, if I open the window. Shop is a standalone brick building about 22' x 15'. Interior is regular sheet rock with insulation top and sides - so just like a house.
