I assume the current owner is not the one who had the work done. Does the current owner have any contact with the previous? The work was done less than 2 years ago, it couln't have floated around to too many people between then and now.

No, current owner knew it had some repairs but not who did them. As with most old guitars it has had numerous repairs. I do not know how much of the work this person did but have some questions regarding a few things and some advice if they'd like (or not, as it may have been someone else).

Mainly I had some questions, like type of adhesive used? How much of the repair work I see was done with it? Type of finish that was applied to the top?

I would also have a few tips for them specific to strategies used on the broken headstock depending on what condition it arrived to them in as it has 2-4 layers of previous repair work it appears.

Exactly this! I am somewhat known for my abilities to undo bad repair work and make it right. As such I see some of then worst guitar trauma in the country. I rarely ever see anyone's finest work, only their worst day. Their job turned nightmare that they wish they'd never taken on.... And often times they will have no idea that what they had done has failed and will keep repeating the same mistakes.

I am not perfect either and understand how these things happen and have always been happy when someone else can point me in a better direction myself. So continue to sign that work. Contact info is a great idea! And if I see something of yours down the road and have some questions or advice I'll get a hold of you and we can talk.

Brian, I have no idea who's mark that is, but the finish looks like some sort of polyurethane, and the glue (based on color, and how cleanly it released) looks like LMI's old white Luthier glue. All guesses, though, I may be wrong.

Thought the same about the glue but they haven't made that in what, 5 years? And it took a bit more heat than it should have to get apart. The reason for clean release I think was glue thickness in that pic because the bridge was a bit tougher where it fit well.

Finish is definitely something catalyzed, or a really good imitation.

Was the whole body done in that finish or just the top? It should have been nitro.

Although I would be tempted to add a small sticker - think those little round price stickers seen at garage sales - somewhere on the underside of the top with date and contact number, neither of the build/repair shops I've spent time with mark their repair work. The rationale is that repair work should be the opposite of new work - as close to undetectable as possible, versus new work which seems to be logo'd, tagged, and clearly identified as the work of the builder.

I'd like to disagree with the policy, but at least three-quarters of the repair work we have seen that needs further attention is unsupported by those that performed the repair, leaving us to figure out what was done and how to undo it. There also seems to be a disturbing correlation between a) those performing substandard repair work, and b) those calling themselves repairmen, but unwilling or unable to fix their fix. [headinwall]

We provide a package with detailed receipt and a copy of any other receipts needed for down-stream warranty claims (e.g., electronics, new tuners, etc.) and the empty string sleeve (if restrung), and hope it stays with the instrument.

Oh my goodness - just reread the earlier posts...so that glossy puddle of what appeared to me to be De-Glu-Goo is in fact adhesive? Wow. Just...wow.

The back had original nitro... Oversprayed with whatever this is. it came right off.

The sides and top however (yes the top too...) appear to be a catalyzed lacquer over an epoxy. Miserable to strip!

It's one thing to sign and or date a repair under the work where it will never be seen versus something like the image below. I think having a date if anything would be potentially useful for a future repairman and a name might help track him down for useful questions like Brian has. That and it's kind of like when you are breaking down a wall in an old house and find an old news paper or something.

If the finish was not .020" thick the FB extension may have had a chance of touching the wood.....
