Anyone have any ideas what kind of wood this is?

looks like cherry to me. I've seen both of those grain patterns commonly in cherry. Not in the same board, tho. Somebody did an unusual match there.

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

The pores are wide open, and it kind of almost has a spongey feel for lack of a better term. It has a really reddish/pink color. It's reminiscient of mahogany I've seen in the past. However I'm pretty far from being a wood expert.

Its a cheap import kit body, I thought these guys typically used basswood. They certainly aren't advertising anything special as far as the wood goes.

It looks like meranti or Philippine mahogany (two of the common names for woods in the genus Shorea woods commonly referred to under the luan trade name in the US) or possibly khaya (african mahogany). Coarse, open pores should rule out cherry or maple, and examination of the quartered faces should allow genuine mahogany to be likewise excluded (there are some photos posted of the differences in another thread, if I recall the discussion correctly). Cherry would also darken fairly rapidly from a salmon pink (freshly sanded) to a deeper reddish hue, so that would also be a check if - in fact - the wood is actually finer grained and closed pore that the photos would suggest.

Back to wiring - two more fixtures and I get to get back to my bench for repair work!

At this point, does it matter? Not to be a S.A. but it looks like "telecaster wood". If is relatively light weight (not a bad thing for a solid body) it is probably lauan (a.k.a. Philippine mahogany) as others have said. It looks like it will make a nice guitar.

That could be any number of tropical hardwoods including luan, but it's certainly not cherry or khaya
