Does the ammonia used in bending alter the color of some woods? Perhaps it is not strong enough to matter? I have seen articles about brushing ammonia onto wood rather than fuming it.

I don't believe the current environmentally-focused Windex formulation actually contains any ammonia - the current SDS for Original Windex shows Isopropanol, 2-Butoxyethanol, Ethylene glycol n-hexyl ether, water, fragrance and blue dye. I found one reference to ammonium hydroxide (ammonia water) on the SC Johnson website (as in "...Windex Blue... does contain ammonia..."), but the SDS does not reflect that as a hazardous ingredient. Given the ammonia smell in some types of Windex, it seem like it is certainly in the mix in some formulations of the cleaner, but straight household ammonia is about 5-10 percent ammonia, which would be close the pre-2006 Windex formula of 5% ammonia by volume.

Bryan, I bet the color changing ammonia is not the stuff u get at the grocery store. Woodie, kind of what I thought. Maybe John can look at ingredients on his windex bottle

Active ingredient in Super Soft II is Diethylene Glycol Monoethyl Ether, maybe there is a similar type in Windex?

here is what I can tell you. My windex says it has ammonia D what ever that is. I can tell you I don't have the water staining that SS2 had and it does work better than plain water.
I can say this with certainty Wood is stupid , get it hot it will bend. I know some people use downy in the water , I have tried that can't say it helped or hurt. I can't take all the credit for windex but I heard this from a few people including our own member here Bob Gleason.

Thanks John. Just alerting folks that might try ur technique that there are multiple formulations out there for Windex. Ammonia is considered by many as an irritant. So they make versions without it. Often it will say "ammonia free" on the label.

I find that the temps can be used across the board. The one thing is that some woods like less moisture than others. Maple and Mahogany especially like less moisture. You won't hurt the wood even up to 400F for a short time. Lace wood will scorch faster than any orther woods but even that can handle 350
In all I am done heating in about 7 minutes
it takes me about 4 min to bend from the time I turn on the machine and about another 3 to reach my desired temp. Also thickness of the wood will come into play. I seldom bend thicker than .075 +/- .005
