Any one got any good marquetry tutorials on making your own inlay banding / backstrips / purfling?....

I'd like to try it one day.

G.

The book and videos by John Bogdanovich are really good for this.

I made several patterns based on Haans page. Have it on 3 guitars in the works. Could not get red heart and holly but maple and bloodwood was plentiful in boards; Holly in veneers. Laid up a number of blocks I have yet to use. Options left me confused so I decided to make a few guitars before making a lot of options.

Bloodwood is beautiful but gums up table saw and drum sander.

I love that Haans. How do you split the herringbone?

Steve, I soak the herringbone in hot water until it is playable enough to split with a utility knife blade...Of course you have to split in the right direction.

Bob, Ebay can help sometimes. Pretty much any wood will gum up sanders except spruce or maple/mahogany/oak.

Haans, One last question - Where do you like to get your herringbone from?

Steve, I'm probably the last guy you would want to ask as I haven't built anything in 6 years+, but I think I got it from LMI. I do remember that once I got some that was a bigger herringbone from someplace, but you want the small stuff.

You want to slice into it so that the utility knife blade does not dig into the pieces. Once you figure it out, it strips pretty easily, but you have watch out time wise. You only get so much time before the glue starts to set again, and you really don't want to get it too "wet" as the pieces will start to fall off. I used to have a basement utility sink with a 3' hose attached and I would shove one piece at a time up the hose for a couple minutes or so and run the hot water at a little more than a trickle. When you have it right, you don't really have to work fast, but efficiently. When it starts getting too dry, you start cutting into the black line next to the herringbone.

After it's split, tape it down to a flat surface till the piece is dry again. It does want to curl up on you.
