I just did
My son asked me if I was hurt
I just thicknessed this sapelle plate for a back. Nothing special. Then I tapped it. And for the first time I heard an amazing rap tone... rings for days.
It’s also fairly thick at .093”
I’ve never built a back that thick but I think I’ll leave it as I fear I’ll miss something if I take it further...

Here is the unassuming top
Btw I’m finding small bodied instruments make me happy:)

Same here. Pretty much a finished thickness in the center and that's on a Grand Concert...never yelled though. Had a Hormigo back and three white oak that made me whistle, and 2 BRW's that made me say " Oh, my..."

I did get a bit of a fright from my first Adi top when I tapped it after closing the box it was so loud.

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

I only yell at the completed boxes.

3/32nd is about normal for most backs.

Sand it thinner, until the tap tone just disappears....
