Hello,

For the folks that install purfling (and maybe binding) with CA, I would like to seek some advice.

I decided to use CA for installing the purfling strips, both edge and bottom, prior to installing the bindings. I shellacked the channel to keep the CA from affecting the top.

What you see in the picture is just HDPE strips as placeholder for the bindings while I tack the purfling in place. This part went well.

For the binding, I normally use titebond and as a last step after taping them into place, I use twill tape to really seat everything down.

Should I try to sand the edge of the channel where the binding will sit to remove the shellac? Or, anyone do the binding with CA as well? How do you deal with any small gaps if you happen to have any? With the twill tape I’ve had good luck with no gaps with using titebond, but I can’t put the twill tape on and wick in CA.

Thanks!
Brad

I wonder if you can strip the shellac back with alcohol and not have to sand.

That could be a good option. It’s only shellacked on the top channel. If I were a thinking man, I would have masked off the rest of the channel. ;)

There is always next time. :)

I do bindings and purflings at the same time and with CA. Works well for me and I've never had any issues with completed guitars over 10+ years.

I seal with shellac, and glue binding with body purfling attached and the top purfling in one shot.
Binding and side purflings are prebent in the bender. I don’t think the CA has any problem sticking to shellac.
I will get half of the top or back taped in place, 1” masking tape with~ 1” between, glue the open spaces, remove the tape, then glue the remainder.
I have generally been quite happy with my binding jobs.

Actually, you can. Just don’t go crazy with the CA on the first pass. You can always remove the tape once the CA has tacked the strips in place and make a second pass. It’s dead easy on the sides and back, but be careful with the top so you don’t have a mess to scrape off the softer top.
The thing about CA is you can eliminate the gaps by whatever means before you reach for the bottle. Apply judiciously between the strips of tape, remove tape and a second application of CA where needed.

As Tim said you can CA with the tape. I tape mine similar to what you have done in your photo at the top with the 3M 233+ (which is what I use). I put a small drop of ultra thin CA on the binding/purfling in between the pieces of tape. After you get all the way around then you can remove the tape and go back and put CA on the whole thing. At first I used too much CA when the tape was on there and it can be a problem but once you figure it out it's not an issue.

I have done a 6 piece binding/purfling set all at once. As they said, get it all looking right, then glue

Thanks, all.

Just to be clear, twill tape is cloth that you wrap similar to what I’ve seen some use rubber bands. I don’t think I want CA anywhere near that unless I’m going for a crochet look. :)

Twill tape — I use cotton sash cord right over the “binding” tape (paper or fiberglass reinforced) to ensure everything is tight. CA doesn’t touch it and it all comes off before the second “insurance” pass with CA.
