Tony was one of the good guys. For however great his culinary skills, he was an even more amazing humanitarian. Never much of a foodie, I watched his shows because he brought the real world into our lives. No matter where he went, even to the countries who our leaders say are our sworn enemies, Tony showed us the human side. He taught us people around the world are all the same, just trying to find that little slice of happiness. He will be sorely missed.

Great video, thanks. Amazing the variety of instruments she makes. With her personality I bet she does great.

All these videos seem to depict lutherie as this quiet, romantic, soft light reverb thing. It would be fun to see one shot with routers blazing, wood dust flying everywhere, and the occasional profanity uttered.

Good guys do not usually express admiration for Fidel Castro and Che Guevara.

I will miss Bourdain like a broken toe.

I can appreciate the boost provided by this sort of documentary to small shop instrument builders, and whatever personal and professional demons plagued him in life, may Mr. Bourdain rest in peace.

I had never heard of Bourdain until his death so I can’t comment on the first two statements but you are badly misinformed on the third.

No profanity in this one, but I like it because I really, really covet this workshop (windows, wood floors, ground level, lots of space), and the builder is shown actually using machines:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EQVfok8LrLA

Of course, I can't resist the temptation to post this send-up of the entire genre of handcraft porn:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TBb9O-aW4zI

And another favorite, also mocking the genre:

Gotta love that extra virgin birch.

I heard they tried a Bearclaw weave, but the focus group all ended up hospitalized so it didn't make the cut.

....sorry.....couldn't resist....

I've lost multiple friends and one family member to suicide. They all seemed like "good guys" in outward appearance. But after their passing, the truth came out and it was never pretty. So I stand by my statement.

Your experience may be different.

Do you have personal experience with Bourdain?

I can’t say I loved him. He was smug and self satisfied in a very Baby Boomer way. But I’ve never seen anything in his shows to indicate he was “bitter and hateful” towards cooks. In fact, he seemed to idolize the “back of the house” in a way that became tiresome. Working 12 hours in a kitchen is hard work, but that doesn’t automatically make you a saint.

If you mean “bitter and hateful” toward the executives at Food Network, well.... I’ve had some experience in that area. “Bitter and hateful” is a mantra for executives in the entertainment industry. I’m not sure that disqualifies any one from being a “good guy”.

But I didn’t know him personally. Sounds like you had a bad personal experience with him.

I think this was a passing reference to the book that put Bourdain on the map, Kitchen Confidential. It wasn’t exactly complementary of the industry.

Guys, I seldom sleep. Instead, I read.... A LOT. It is no secret in the restaurant biz that Bourdain frequently savaged other famous cooks and restaurant owners. The guy dripped with snark every time I saw him on TV. In fact, the only time I can remember him acting like a normal person was the video posted by the OP.

And his politics were savage as well. He was a well known fund raiser and donor to Communist terror groups in Central and South America (especially Venezuela). He starred in and directed tourism commercials for Castro's state tourism agency, and wrote a tourism pamphlet for the Hotel Nacional in Havana - "The Tony Bourdain Guide to Cuba". He owned framed photos of Castro and Guevara, hung in his home with pride.

The nightly news won't tell you this....but what I've posted is all true. Anthony was NOT a nice guy.

And this is my last word on the subject.

What utter malarkey! I thought you had some real information from personal experience, not regurgitated nonsense from late nights reading conspiracy theory fantasy. How in the world could you know what photos he has in his home? How could some blogger from Kansas City, or wherever? Venezuelan terrorist groups? Really?

I don’t know if he was an a$&@;le or a saint, or most likely just another flawed human. But out of respect for the dead it is simple decency not to spread a bunch of outrageous smears on someone you never met and clearly know nothing about.

Nothing I have seen or read about Bourdain tells me he was anything but a guy who cared for the every man, the people who make up the vast majority of the population of this earth. He also had no love for the users and abusers and was not afraid to call them out. He spoke for those who have no voice and did it so well.

He was one of the good guys.
