You coming?!
I'm going to try! I'm long overdue for a SLG and it would be fun to meet you other OLFers. Seems like there is a nice little local group of active acoustic guitar builders posting here.

I will confirm on this thread by afternoon.

So?

What a story teller John Greven is... never fails. So generous with sharing information. Talking us through his process for selecting top wood, pairing those with bracing, guitar re-topping techniques, working with Gruhn, personal philosophy on CNC... a wonderfully fun evening with a great group.

Huge thanks to John Parchem and the Seattle Luthiers Group for putting this together.

So good to see all of you again, and some for the first time. See you next at the La Conner Guitar Festival? Its just around the corner...

Yes, nice meeting everyone! Sorry I didn't have a chance to say goodbye as I was in the back trying out John's guitars.

It would be fun to get together and bring one of our guitars for everyone to check out. I'm open to hosting in Bellevue.

I didn't realize he'd brought one with. That would have been fun to try. I've played several Henderson's which are great giutars if that's your thing. Bluegrass monsters....not really my thing.

Just out of curiosity, what was his philosophy on CNC production in a nutshell?

I agree, it was great to meet all of you at the Sloop for beers and tacos before the SLuG meeting. I hope we do it again. I also like the idea of getting together at some point to hear and play each others guitars.

Michael - He brought three guitars. I was back there with Pat trying them out so I missed seeing you guys head out. The guitars were gorgeous and sounded great.

Haans - "Just out of curiosity, what was his philosophy on CNC production in a nutshell?" Not a fan at all.

Yes he was not a fan, He thought that it was important to feel the the wood as he worked. For example feel the mass of a bridge as he shaped it. His CNC is his hands and a belt sander. I think he free handed almost everything on it.

Did I hear right; 25 hours per including finish? Output 3 per month?

The 22 hours has got to be total actual hands-on-the-guitar time. He said the finishing process itself took three days (which is pretty remarkable). He is truly driven toward efficiency. No doubt about that.

That's mind-boggling. Especially doing it all by hand...

On May 8th we are meeting again for a tool and luthier supply auction/swap. We will encourage people to bring instruments in to play and have played.

Does anyone recall what John was using to seal his tops before finish? I think I remember he is using endurovar for finish.

You're right he is using endurovar, but I didn't hear him say anything about sealer.

As I understood, he just uses Endurovar - light coat on top for a quick seal. John stressed his focus on not letting anything soak into the top wood - Edurovar catalyzes so quickly that he feels a light coat is perfect for the first pass. He also mentioned that Endurovar does not work well over sanding sealers or shellac, which is why he does not use those for sealing.

He then proceeds with his regular Edurovar coats to build the finish.

He brushed on a couple of coat of epoxy (he said the epoxy but I do not remember) use a fast hardener and level sanded before applying the enurovar.

System 3 SilverTip Epoxy for back/side sealer.
Light coat of Endurovar for top "sealer".

I've been using Silvertip for the last 20 guitars and really like it, and I started applying it with a foam brush 2 guitars ago.

My notes match Daniel's. I thought it was interesting when he said shellac doesn't play well with Endurovar, as shellac typically sticks to most anything, and vice versa.
