I have a friend who asked me about a guitar he recently picked up for cheap. It needs a few obvious things, but he is also concerned that it is a fake.
Before he had it set up by a Luthier he wanted to see what you guys thought. And no... I’m not the friend haha.

Here are the pics he sent me

Looks pretty old and crispy. Hard to fake that. Difficult to be certain with only photos but I believe it might be real.

Agree with Barry, looks like G*bson to me.

The p-90's of this era were smoking hot too. IIRC this is a 125.

Looks like an old ES-125 that I had. Short scale.

The tuner buttons were early plastic, bake-o-lite I think and they are known to shrink, crack and fall off. This one looks like the real deal to me from here.

These had rolled edges on the fret board and wire wheel marks on the fret boards too since they used a wire wheel do produce these and other G*bsons.

Here's a good resource for info on vintage Gibsons: http://www.guitarhq.com/gibson.html

Last year, a friend of mine - a pro trumpet player - asked me to look at a flat top that his father in law thought was a vintage Gibson. It wasn't looking promising, and when I put an inspection mirror inside, I found an envelope with $1,000 in it. He had forgotten that he put it there after a gig, six months before, and was going to put it down his garbage shute before he brought it over. It was worth about $1,015, including the case and the envelope!

As I remember, mine was a good little player. Plywood, sure, but with some heavy strings was pretty FAT sounding. Fun little thing to play with the short scale. I actually regretted selling it, but it was the only 'lectric I ever owned.
Always did want a Super 4 like Dave Ray had, but then I never could play the jazzy fusion blues he could on that Super...

I have a 1959 ES-125T. That guitar looks like mine - it looks pretty legit. Your buddy did pretty good for himself at that price - I think I gave about $1000 for mine a year ago. Good for him!

Early to mid 50's ES125, just sold mine last year.
Not incredibly valuable but nice to have for a different sound and feel.
Looks genuine to me

Lots of mojo there. Gig with it and prepare to be surrounded by gawkers at break time.
