Thats what I like about building Ukuleles it's a bit easier to get crazy with the beautiful woods.

Not only that, the ukulele world seems much more receptive to crazy beautiful woods than the guitar world so you actually get to use more of them. I've always been amazed by the variety of woods used not only for the back and sides, but for the tops too of ukuleles.

I would say I'm more of a typical top guy I like spruce,redwood,cedar for tops. But this is coming more from being a guitarist for 35 years and having loads of vintage guitars and beautiful hand made acoustic guitars from my uncle so I'm a tad biased.

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.
