Oh man, that looks awful. I feel for you. I sliced my left index finger pretty good just about a year ago. Still don't have the feeling back. That was nowhere near as extensive your chisel cut though. I hope it heals well.

Thanks to you all for your well-wishes. It is one heck of a laceration, both in length and depth. Somehow, miraculously, it seems there is no tendon or serious nerve damage. I will know more after seeing a hand specialist.

How did it happen? The way these things always happen: A lapse in technique and a momentary distraction. I was thinking about a work project while finnesing the heel of a neck. Looked at what I was doing and thought, "I should reposition my hand." Boom. Too late. Knew instantly it was bad but couldn't believe the extent of the damage once I got into the ER and had a good look at things.

Be careful out there. Even in the quietest, most serene moments at your workbench attention must be paid.

Thanks for the reminder George, hand tools can give you a really bad day.
I really hope there's a minimum of any permanent effect to the nerves, that's a really nasty cut.

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

Wow George, that’s unbelievable. I had a bad 9 month run where I put my hand through a window, put the same hand in a blender I presumed switched off, and learned why you’re supposed to feed against the direction of the blade when using a router table...

Glad your going to be ok, thats one ugly cut. I've got a scar about that long running from the middle of my palm into my wrist. Working in my dads shop, one of my brothers watched it happen and about keeled over

I hope you heal quickly, and well, George, with no permanent damage. I managed to get a three stitch chisel cut in the mid knuckle of my little finger that caused me trouble for close to four years. There wasn't any nerve damage, just all the tiny blood vessels that got severed.

Hi george sorry that you did so much damage to your hand ! Please take your time and let it heal slowly, no sunshine in seattle, to make it heal quicker ,you might want to see a certified hand therapist who can suggest excercises to strengthen your hand very very slowly, once it starts to heal. All the best ernie.

Oh boy! I had a smaller reminder from a chisel last winter. Took several weeks to heal but what’s scary is thinking about what could have happened if not for a little luck. I’m no Django - my playing is handicapped enough as it is. I’m glad you don’t seem to have bad tenon or nerve damage. Best wishes!

Happened to me once and I just yelled up to my wife, "Hospital!"
Once it heals well, looks like guitar playing might help...
