I am building a Sinker Redwood top/Walnut back and sides 00028. I was considering using a redwood burl for the headstock, but I admit I don't know what I should shoot for
in terms of veneer thickness. Redwood burl veneer seems to only come in thicknesses around 1/42" or so. That seems too thin. Anyone know of a supplier that has something thicker?

Try to find a block of burl, and slice off what you need.

I would not not go for a 'veneer', as in 1/42" for a head stock. I think you want something like 1/10" or so. Pacific Coast Woods and others here can fix you up

First google Redwood Burl Poaching so that you can make an educated decision on what you buy and where you buy it from. This has been endemic in Northern California and Oregon.

I used a Redwood veneer on this with good results.
I glued a small piece of Mahogany at the head to nut transition and sanded it to make a "ramp".
This gives the appearance of a thick veneer and produces a nice ledge behind the nut as well as area for binding. You could laminlate veneer too.
If you cannot find a thick piece and decide to try the veneer, I recommend using a veneer glue.

I've used it before too, and other burls, and just laminated it to some other thicker plate. In fact I've laminated walnut burl veneer on to a regular walnut plate and you'd never know it wasn't a two piece plate.
