mixed two wood putty fillers by Minwax to try and match a Rosewood fretboard but ended up with a Slate color.

Has anybody used Brown shoe polish over filler? it is a Pea sized gouge but I really did a poor match.

I also have on hand: BirchwoodCasey Truoil
and BirchwoodCasey Walnut stain.

Which would get me closer to a color that would pass the casual glance test?

I would use rosewood dust and CA. I don't see that you have anything to lose by trying shoe polish. Just keep it confined to the area of the repair and understand that it may change (i.e. rub off) with play.

I have rosewood on beater guitars so I can get rosewood dust. What is CA?
Im going to have to let this dry 48 hrs so I cant touch it until tomorrow. Amazingly this Minwax putty is still soft today. I may have to wait 72 hrs.

I have two other test spots on a maple board I am gong to test the color first.
I have Rosewood dust, Truoil, walnut stain and shoe polish to mix and play with.

This fricken minwax putty has been drying 30 hours and is still like it was when I applied it. Still soft.
There were no directions on the tiny bottle so I aasume you just apply it straight out the bottle.

I don't think this putty will work at all. it says it doesn't harden.
What good is it it doesn't harden? Why wasn't that written on the bottle?

Rosewood dust sounds good. CA is super glue. I know the real name is cyanoacrylate I was just having trouble spelling it. Thanks god spell check clicked in. I wouldn't leave that putty stuff on there. Clean it off it's probably for something else.

This gouge is on the top left corner of the fretboard at the nut. It is not in an area that effects playability. A Retriever I have knocked over the Les Paul.
This dog has previously shredded couches.

Ok I would still pick that putty out of the gouge. That should be not too difficult a fix. If it's that close to the nut you could just fill it with ca. You'll never notice it if your easy with it.
