Hi Guys, I've not seen one of these threads for a time, kinda miss them.
It's great to see what other people are doing.
I've been holding off roughing out this classical heel, never done one before so I was a bit nervous.
The Mora woodcarving knife was a good decision, saved my bacon.
(Break for the day, Curry tonight, the smell is killing me!)

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

That's a good looking heel Colin. I'm just doing some spraying this weekend. I just checked the mil thichness and I'm at 4. Think I need to add 3-4 more mils today. That ought to do it!!!

I was scrubbin' her up with Royal-Lac last night, padding a few more coats on the top to account for a few spots that got rubbed a bit thin.

Nice looking work, guys. Nice, dramatic lighting for your photography, too.

One for me!!! it's been a while since I had a new guitar. Sold the last one I made for myself a couple of years ago and I haven't had time to replace it. This one started it's life as a commission. When I bent the sides this flatish sawn Mun Ebony had so many cracks open up I could not sell it for fear that I would see it back in my shop way too soon. When I shot the first coat on the back there were a number of hair line cracks show up that I didn't know were there. Other than Brazilian, this was the most expensive set I have purchased. I got to see it in person when I bought it. My gut told me "don't buy that flat sawn Ebony". There you go. All the cracks were filled with ca and sanding dust. It will be interesting to see what happens to it over the years.

Not on the workbench, but this will be going on the ceiling between the benches this weekend

Hey Don, I'm trying to give it up - actually putting things back and tidying as I go, otherwise I spend more time looking for things than I do working!

Alex, don't remind me, I have a whole kitchen to rip out, plasterboard and all, insulate, rewire and fit new units. Waste of building time if you ask me!

I have 2 pre war Martins. 1 needs a new bridge ( D28 ) 1941 a 000-18 1939 needs a set up

That really is a nicely shaped heel, Colin. I've got three on the bench (i.e., pool table), one is a padauk that just needs strings (had to reglue bridge), one is a maple build needs tuning machines and strings, and one is bocote needs bridge, machine and strings. All are pretty close to finished, but yesterday was my day with the wife, and today is grandkid's 10th birthday party. Don't know if I'll even get to touch them until tomorrow.

I've been picking away at a an 1830's Lacote guitar build. This one is just for fun so I'm not using high end materials, though maybe I should have! I only get to build during breaks in my regular work so environmental control, etc, is difficult to maintain.

Friday, I managed to open the big door in my shop and the afternoon light poured in and illuminated my bench, so this is some of what is on it.

BTW, if anyone is still following bu viola da gamba project, I am basically done and am fearfully bringing the strings up to pitch! Photos to follow.

That is very cool and unique as well as being our national animal Joe! Look forward to seeing it all shined up.

Have my Lutz/Walnut on it. Just because it is time I finally decided to make up some deeper clamps for clamping the bridge. Cut up some 1" tubing.



And welded up. Threaded rod and a nut welded inside the tubing.



Also in the picture is a strip of Jatoba between the neck and the clamp. I used the Jatoba for a couple of fretboards and had the thought of trying to 'ebonize' it using a vinegar-iron solution. Stuck it in and forgot it for a couple of days, Pulled it out and it seemed to work. Might do it to the fretboard and bridge of this guitar.
