Just got a zoom h2n for my birthday and recorded my first tune on a guitar I made a while ago. Very impressed with the quality of these little recorders but have no idea what I am doing really. The tune is in dadgad on this guitar:

Good recording. The guitar is beautiful, very tastefully done. I usually don't like rosettes but yours is dark and subtle in a nice way.

The name catgut is confusing. There are two explanations for the mix up.

Catgut is an abbreviation of the word cattle gut. Gut strings are made from sheep or goat intestines, in the past even from horse, mule or donkey intestines.

Otherwise it could be from the word kitgut or kitstring. Kit meant fiddle, not kitten.

H4n's rock. Who'd a thought you could get that quality out of those little mics. Not to mention all it is capable of doing. Do we live in the age of technology or what.

Beauty guitar Derek. Not your first I'm guessing. Just curious. Why did you choose to use Yellow Cedar for the top? It grows massive in my area (not so much in yours I think) and it's like...... pretty much free if you know where to look and I have yet to use it for a top. Yours is not the first fine sounding guitar I have heard with a YC top.

Nice recording! Pretty guitar, too. The cedar top is nice; I wonder if it really will break in faster than spruce. I'd like to compare after it has been played for a while. Thanks for posting!

I will definitely be using yellow cedar again but will voice the top differently next time. This guitar is my 3rd but the first I have been sort of happy about!
I am not sure it sounds any different now than it did after the first week. One thing I have noticed is it kinda opens up after playing for about 10 mins - I think I have read that somewhere before about yellow cedar but not sure why?

I have a yellow cedar top, some way off quarter but light and stiff. How did you brace and voice it and what did you use?

Guitar sounds great but only got iPad speaker here. Closer to spruce than the softer and airier sound of wrc?

Mike - I would say it has a sound closer to spruce than wrc but is quite different to both. I believe it may be more suited to a nylon string guitar but I am pleased with how it turned out.
The x brace was forward shifted to accomodate the change in scale to give the 13 frets. The board I had was really stiff and I braced it relatively light with alpine spruce that was off quarter. I scalloped the bass leg of the x and kept the treble quite knife like. I also thinned the top quite a lot more than I would with spruce - next time I might leave the top as thick as I would with wrc and brace even lighter...
