I spent a week at the International Machine and Trade Show in Chicago last week . On the way out of town I decided to stop at a few Garage sales. Bumped into this little Jewel , is she worth anything ?

Chris beat me to the answer. Heck, Wud, you already knew the answer. I frankly don't know whether it has a lot of collector value, but it's a real find for a garage sale deal. Superficially, it looks like it just needs a clean up. You might find that it needs more as you begin to get all that grime off. But what the heck? I love arch tops and I love old Gibsons. My '60s vintage low end Gibson flat top has the same head plate logo so I'm guessing this guitar is approximately the same vintage. Please post some more pictures when she's cleaned up. Congratulations on your find.
Patrick
PS: Have you determine whether it's a plywood or carved instrument? And is the pickup still alive?

I have no idea what dollar value it has, but I think it's worthy of your restoration skills, Wud. Does the pickup work at all? Just curious over or under $200?

It is the Plywood build , and yes the Pickup works . Not 100% but it works . The guitar has a straight neck and mainly need cleaned and tlc . Back appears to have a little water damage , but not sure . Gonna take it apart , get the electronics out and clean up with preservation polish and see what i have.

AK: Well Under ! :D

I think I see a bent shaft on the d-string tuner, too, but that doesn't seem like a very big deal to me. A little belt rash on the back, but what old guitar doesn't have a bit of that? If there's some water damage, you'll figure out how to deal with it. I bet it'll clean up beautifully, with just enough finish crazing to add to its cool vintage vibe. If you decide to try to do something about the edge dings on the head stock, I'll be real interested to see your approach to that. Once again, congratulations on a nice find!

Good find Wud. It looks like an ES 125 that I had in my shop recently for repair. If I remember correctly they were made from about 1949 to 1956. Values were all over the map from $350.00 to $2250.00 when I did a search om ebay.

Enjoy it

Cecil

Hey, Wud,

You've probably already seen this. This particular guitar, while in great condition, looks almost too new to me. But it's probably a lot like yours looked when it left the factory:

Cleaning is coming along quite nicely . It has some finish issues and right now I have no intention in addressing those . All in all its going to clean up nicely . Preservation polish is great stuff , and I have been experimenting with some 3600 grit sand paper and preservation polish as wet sanding on tougher spots and its working well .

Hey, Wud, that's looking pretty nice to me. I have two requests: Please explain how you are doing the wet sanding. I can see the pictures just fine, but I'm not familiar with the polish so I don't really understand what I see. Have you flooded on liquid polish or have you added something to it to thin it? Secondly, please post follow up pictures of the newly cleaned and polished top and sides.
Many thanks and congratulations once again on a great find. I'm glad you are bringing this old axe back.

Basically ive put the polish on full strength and spread it around , it softens the laq slightly and pulls the grime and dirt up. I wipe it off after a letting it set for a bit per the instructions. Then I reapply the polish, and wet sand with 3600 basically like u would to sand laq. Seems I get alot more out if it I. Regard to cleaning. Again its an experimentation. I have done this in cheaper guitars and it worked well , I DID NOT try it on a valuable guitar first Lolololol.

I like the way you left the aged charm, instead of going for the new finish look, Wud! Sometime just a little Grecian Formula does the trick. :D

Man, I think that looks great. In particular, the top came out looking aged but nearly undamaged. The smaller dings around the rims and the "rash" on the back don't really bother me at all. It looks just like what it is--a vintage guitar with some serious miles on it. Thanks for explaining the polish technique.

As for the strings, I couldn't tell you for sure, but I imagine the high E would have been at least a .012 or .013.
