Just wondering if anyone has had the experience of discovering tiny holes in mahogany guitar wood. I bought a length of mahogony from a Luthier hoping to build a neck for an acoustic project that I'm working on, but when I put it through my thickness sander I notice tiny pin prick holes here and there that are similar to woodworm holes. I am really hoping its something else and not woodworm as its a nice chunk of wood. Is it possible that mahogony sometimes has holes like this or how would I know for sure if its woodworm

I have a piece of H mahogany for 2 necks that has a worm hole in it. I knew in advance about the worm hole and got it at a big discount.

Yep worm holes and Adventiuos buds (AKA pinknots) are two very common defects in mahogany. I have never found any actual bugs or worms....at least in mahogany.

Thats what I was thinking until........... out comes a little critter and crawled across the table. Thats the only one I saw but now I am worried. Is there any treatment I could use > Theres just a few small tiny holes on the neck blank but if I seal them in then surely they will find a way out at some stage and create more holes ?

Heat is the only sure (safe) method to kill the insects.
133 degrees Fahrenheit for 30 minutes.(30 minutes after the center of the wood has reached a temperature above 130 degrees)

Mahogany is subject to insect attack if it is not properly processed. Especially true for the sapwood and other parts near the log surface. If the wood lays in the forest or sawmill in a humid condition for too long it will get invaded by insects. This is not uncommon in the harvest areas. But normally the insect infested wood is discarded.

Ha Ha !! I laughed when I read this !! Don't get me wrong as I really appreciate the advise and I'm sure that tip would work in Caliufornia' or some hot place but unfortunately for me I live in Ireland--rained all day yesterday lol ..... Although , when the summer comes here we do get nice weather but probably never hot enough to kill those critters we are talking about !!
I did use a woodworm paint on liquid and gave it a few coats so I guess that should work. I will stay away from that supplier from now on.

I'm sorry Rusty. I heard they were having a heat wave in Ireland. Yea that idea probably wouldn't work for you. To bad last year the wife and I caught bedbugs. I had to put my empty cases in my car for safety sake. Didn't really think a bedbug would get in them but couldn't take the chance. Had to hang all my instruments from the ceiling. Extermination cost us almost two grand. So I just suggested that remedy.
