do you guys think this air compressor would be good enough to finish guitars? I order nitro lacquer today.

Plus what type of paint guns are you guys using?

Some people use this very compressor to drive a small detail gun like the Wacom:

Do you have one or are you looking to put together a spray system?

Frankly, I was AMAZED at how much more efficiently HVLP uses material. In the very short long run, the money saved on laquer will more than make up for possibly a slightly more expensive system than it looks like you'd be putting together, although at $359 for that compressor, it's a little small for running a spray gun.

Add a $110 spray gun and you're at $470 already.

The Fuji Semi-pro system is $399 here : http://www.phelpsrefinishing.com/S2.html

And the Mini-Mite 3 is $599 from the same guy, which is plenty powerful for spraying nitro. I have the MiniMite 4 and actually think it's too powerful for just guitars, I would have been fine with the Minimite 3.

Well worth the $120 more, as you will save more than that in material.

The compressor system just blows most of it into the air. You COULD say they just really blow! laughing6-hehe

Here is the EXACT compressor that I have and use. And its WAY cheaper than the one you are looking at. You have to buy compressor oil too btw, so factor that into your cost.
http://www.harborfreight.com/25-horsepo ... 67847.html

Here is a spray gun set that comes with two guns, one a 0.8mm tip and the other a 1.2mm tip, has all the cleaning stuff and surprisingly, the guns are VERY good. Plus with the 0.8mm tip you can spray stain and do bursts that way if you want.

http://www.walmart.com/ip/Campbell-Haus ... t/12534872

So there is an entire set up, adding compressor oil, regulator, and filter you would have an entire spray system for about $50 less than what you would spend on just the compressor you are looking at.

Spray tip, either thin your lacquer with 30%thinner and 70% lacquer and slightly heat the lacquer by putting it in hot water for 30 minutes before spraying to get some good results. On my final coats I like to thin the lacquer to a 60% thinner and 40% lacquer to get a super high gloss finish.

Yeah.

Plus the material efficiency can save you a lot of money in the long run.

You'll like either way. One of them cost less, and has much more versatility

Gun transfer efficiency should be as good as for an HVLP conversion gun as for a turbine gun. The issue is usually that folks buy a cheap gun with crappy atomization and poor fan control, crank up the pressure to fix the problem...the gun ends up well above the tip pressures that HVLP needs and transfer efficiency goes in the toilet. The fix is get a decent conversion gun and learn how to set viscosity, etc. Cheap guns can be pretty decent, even if not very durable. Plan in buying several HF guns, thoroughly clean and defunk, then assemble one decent gun from the best of the parts. IMO, easier to get a decent SATA, Iwata, or similar if using a compressor.

That little 4 gallon compressor won't run a conversion gun though.
