These hum cancelling DiMarzio pups are purportedly wound to emulate a P-90. If they get close I think I'll be happy enough....but the plastic covers HAVE to go.

Interestingly...this cover and the pickup base (which remains) provide a ground that completely surrounds the coils. Makes me wonder how far this idea would go to quieting down a single coil P-90...assuming all or part of the P-90 noise is due to RF.

Wow. Did you CNC those covers? Are they metal?
My experience with those Dimarzios is that they are designed to fit into and replace the p-90, but I don't think they sound like them.

The cover might have some possibilities for true p-90's though.

I made an interesting discovery the other day.

It could be argued that some percentage of RF comes from OUR BODIES!

At least, my friend's guitar had a LOT more hum and noise when he was holding it against HIS body than mine, even after discarding our cell phones and watches.

Yes...those are my design. They are aluminum. I polished the sides but I worried that picking would make fairly short work of that polish...so I brushed the tops.

DM makes a number of pickups in this configuration. These are the DP154 for the bridge and 162 for the neck. If they end up not sounding like P-90 at all I'll be mildly disappointed but I can try DP169...which they say emulates the P-90 sound the best. Then, of course, I could always just use P-90's.

Soap bar P-90 covers and soapbar 90 style for mini-humbuckers would be very nice additions to what you have there.

Seymour Duncan made some replacements for the original Gibson pickups. I don't think DiMarzio ever did anything attempting to recreate the Firebird pickup. That might be because there's a lot of complaints about the Gibson original pickup. I never heard them so I don't really know how they sound. DiMarzio DOES have a number of humbucker and dual coil Strat type pickups based on the concept though.

Very classy looking covers. The brushed finish is a nice modern look. Now the polished covers will all look gaudy

I got them mounted in a new model of mine today....a small, semi-hollow body.

These pups are fairly close to a P-90 tone...not quite the growl of the Mosrite semi-hollow I last heard. Idk...too many variables. They sound good though.

Nice job with those new covers. Lindy Fralin makes a nice set of hum canceling p-90's with just a single row of pole pieces for those that like the traditional single row look. They have a stacked coil arrangement. Mike

Thanks....you know I read about Fralin's hum-cancelling P-90's on his site but comments on the Gear Page about them seemed to steer toward Lollar's version. I'm looking for that classic growl. These DiMarzios don't quite do it but they're close enough for now.

I ended up with the Dimarzio's more out of desire to experiment than anything else. I bought three sets and they'll go in both the guitar models I currently make. The idea is to hear the same pickup in guitars made in two entirely different ways (but using the same woods) in order to be honest when talking to people about the differences in construction. Three sets of Lollars would eat into my retirement.

I asked the "engineers" at both DiMarzio and Lace about that. They both said the magnetic field wasn't altered by the presence of aluminum but the guy at Lace did ask how thick my top face was. The Sensors have a unique, smaller field. He was worried the thickness keeping the strings away from it....but the aluminum on my rings is as thick as the original plastic covers....about .03".

I'm not certain either DiMarzio or Lace actually has the technology under their roof to say with certainty that aluminum in the magnetic field doesn't alter anything about it. I KNOW I don't have the stuff to say.

I did test impedance to see if there was any difference between aluminum covered, uncovered, and covered/grounded....but there wasn't on six separate pickups.
