No a whole heck of alot. I roughed out my neck on the bandsaw. It's getting really busy at my day job at the Post Office. I hope to get the neck close to shape this weekend, and maybe if your lucky bend the sides. Image

So today I cut out the tuner holes. ImageI also started roughing out the neck. I like to use a curved rasp/file and chisels. ImageImage

So I got the neck all smoothed out and shaped the way I want today. I used 80 grit Green paper 3M sandblaster sandpaper to get it roughed out. I took most of the meat off between the ends with a tabletop belt sander. I finished with the 320 Purple 3M sandblaster sandpaper. The paper works so well compared to other tan/brown papers. I should get a coat of finish on tomarrow after I use the neck to line up my neck block later on today. Image

I drilled the holes for the bolts in the neck block. I changed the plans and used my neck block style. A little smaller than I typically use, to fit in the smaller space. Since I fitted the neck to the block already, and the neck is done, I can use the center of the neck fitted to the neckblock to get a straight neck to body joint. My workboard(Solara) have a straight line going all the way across. I line up the top using the center glue joint, clamp it. Mark the center of the neck on both ends and the block and glue it in. I use an angled caul since the block has a slight radious to fit the back later. Glued in the tail block too. Ready for side-bending this weekend. I can't wait to try out the ash for the 1st time. I hope it bends nice. There's going to be a huge surplus of ash in the next decade due to the Emerld Ash Borer thats beginning to kill the trees in the midwest. I hope to salvage wood for future projects. Image

I'm no expert on measurements, but is your X-brace about 2 inches tall at the joint? Looks a touch bulky to me, but that could be because you used a potato to take the picture.

Jeez man...sorry for the double zing post. I was on a roll.

Sadly, it is Mrs. costa who gets the joke.

Oh I got it, I was meaning that Tony only dreams of having 6 inches of wood. I wonder if Stew-Mac sells microscopes and tweezers.

There is a Tweezer and Microscope Emporium in my neighborhood. I'm all set. There is also a Spatula City, here if you buy 12 spatulas, you get the 13th for free. But that is for another thread.

Spatula City is one of my favorite stores! I love their commercials. They always seem to come on during shows like Connan the Librarian and Wheel of Fish.

Spatula City knows their target audience so they only pick the best advertising slots.

I think i'm going to be out. I'm going to come up short. I really want this guitar to come out nice, so I don't want to throw it together at the last minute. I'm going to keep my thread going until i'm done though. I doubt I would have won anyway. So many nice guitars entered that are way better than mine. Nice work everyone.

Jason, sorry to hear that but understand not wanting to throw it together. Too much work involved. Make sure you post photos when you get it done.

So I didn't finish the guitar on time. But I am still going to post it here. So I got the sides bent. Pre-shaped to the back slope profile, and glued to the head/tail blocks. I will glue the linings in when the glue is dry. Then do the final shaping of the sides. I need to think of something for the end graft. Maybe some curly maple. Image

I glued in the linings on the top last night. This afternoon, I profiled the sides where they slope nice. Then glued on the linings for the back. I leave them a little high, then sand them down at a slight angle to match the back radius. Total shop time at this point. 14.5 hours. ImageImageImageImageImage

I'm really glad you are clocking your shop time. I have only a rough guess of how long it takes me to build a guitar. And it is extremely rough.
