I live in Iowa and Im trying to decide what to use as a fingerboard. The only suitable fingerboard wood that that I know of that grows around us is rock maple. Do any of you who live in North America know of any others? (I was thinking of using walnut but upont doing some research I found that that walnut will have durability/pitting issues) -Alex

I just prepared some boards for my challenge build, I made one maple, one walnut and one cherry, I am dubious with the walnut, but I think I will be making a uke, and I will try the walnut. I am wondering what the fish glue wash would do for the durability. Black locus I hear is a good N American fb wood.

I picked up a piece of black locust for a finger board. I haven't done anything with it yet, but it should be plenty hard enough. I'll likely laminate it so that it will have quarter grain.

I'm going with some persimmon I cut off my place here in Tennessee, fingerboard, & bridge. Going with local black locust for the bridge plate.

I picked up some Desert Ironwood from Arizona on ebay that were being sold as knife scales for bridge blanks...Otherwise I've been pondering mesquite, and osage orange also for fretboards. All are kind of difficult to obtain, and the ironwood and mesquite are kind of expensive (trying to keep the whole thing under 150 bucks). I hadn't thought about Cocobolo..Could be a good option! If I go with maple, I think I would get some jet black, as I'm not a big fan of the color on acoustics.

I second Desert Ironwood, and then there's always Texas "ebony":
Grows in our valley, and though not a true ebony, seems just as hard.
Color ranges from dark golden brown to a dark blackish mauve.
