Several months ago, my sister, who lives up in Gainesville, FL said she spotted a tree that had been struck by lightning last year looked like it may be spalted wood and said the next time I visit her, we should go check it out - it was cut into several logs and I ended up bringing a couple of logs home after visiting her for Thanksgiving - i am going to do different experiments with drying/cutting the wood - if all goes well - i may try to recon a couple larger pieces to do some carved or drop tops with... I am also going to be using this for some other cool wood projects - it's actually around 20% on the moisture meter and is really dense and not punky at all - may be good for some "green turning" - I spent almost 10 minutes on the sander to get the chainsaw marks out of it on the bottom picture...

Ooh, I'd like a couple slices of that for rosettes and other inlay. How big is it?

Hi Dennis,
The piece in the bottom pic is actually smaller than most of the logs, because it was more of a branch - it's approx 4" x 5" (not including the bark) the logs run in between 4" to 8" wide on the ends. I plan to slice a log into sheets tomorrow and see how the wood reacts - will keep you posted - thanks, V
