Well, I think we all know that simply machining a piece of spruce to the same dimensions as a good instrument doesn't necessarily mean it's going to sound anything like the original but - there probably is some good info to be gleaned from such a scan.

There was a discussion on another forum about non-invasive thickness measurement on another forum a few years ago and as it was, I happened to have a demo scanner near me for work so I threw a mando I had lying around in there for a scan.

The interesting thing is that theoretically, you could determine density distribution because the scan itself is calibrated. With enough head scratching, one could probably learn a lot from something like this.

I always wear white gloves when I handle my Strad.

They never do mention the tone or how the replica played or sounded. You have to wonder about the method of construction and how closely they can duplicate the wood and grain. The recipe for the finish; "was it put on hot or cold" how was it applied? Did he wash the wood with a type of sealer/hardener before applying the finishing? IMHO...I Imagine the CNC can cut the pieces to exacting dimensions. The real issue would be material quality and manner of construction. I have heard that prior to building his violins there was the era of continual winter (Mini Ice Age) which caused the tree growth to change giving the trees a tighter closer ring there by changing the density and grain. Would all of this show up on a scan and chemical testing. I don't know as my knowledge is less than that of an apprentice/armature. But I like to ruminate on ideas though.
