I scanned through that thread (certainly not every post) and what that guy did is very impressive. I think more so the fact that he did it on a folding table in his kitchen than the fact that he didn't use power tools (also very impressive).

The result is definitely very impressive. It shows what a little determination and perseverance (and a lot of natural skill/talent) can do. Probably doesn't hurt of have a patient wife who wants you to build her a Harpsichord either :p

Cool! The best part is that you aren't thinking about building, you are doing it. Making sawdust man! Power tools are nice but 500 years ago people were building instruments with chisels and knives and some were doing amazing work, right? If you can get a tile cutting bit for your dremel, and you are careful, you can cut a lot of wood away and do a very nice job of it. With that and a few really sharp chisels, and sandpaper you can do anything you need to for shaping, it will just take longer. If you are on an extreme budget just keep your eyes open at second hand stores or garage sales and such and you can get what you need one tool at a time.

If I was marooned on an island with a pocket knife and a set of strings I could build a guitar. It might take a little while though....
