The Uke that wails.

A fun little project. I was about to make a standard acoustic Uke but got a bit sidetracked. This is a 17" scale tenor built in the fender style. I fashioned a string mute in an attempt to make it sound a bit more traditional, mission accomplished sound wise but some refinement is in order. As you can see in the pics, the mute can be switched off to allow for some full tilt boogie rock and roll fun. The mute also allowed me to use a $15 six string hardtail bridge and not have to pay $50 for a four string setup. The hardware is from Stew-Mac and GFS. There is a decent piece of Sitka Spruce under the Bahama Blue Metalic paint job.
The finish is my first foray into catalyzed polyurethane. Learned some things there. Let's just say we'll save the hi res photography for future projects.

I bought my first uke around 7 years ago... what a great instrument - there is no way you can play one without a smile on your face and I imagine an electric one would bring people to the next level- I have to agree with Alan; would love to hear a sound clip or video of you doing some traditional uke music like Pantera on this thing!

I can't play this thing any better than I can play a six string, and I suck at that. I'll get a friend to lay down some licks for you guys in the next few days. I'll also get some better pics up so you can see the trapazoid neck. I left the neck a full 1" thick the whole length to eliminate the need for a truss rod and with the 1 5/8" nut width, the trapazoid shape feels very comfortable. Of the 7 or 8 people who have played it only one noticed the odd shape and he had no complaints.
