This is the type with one flat bar and one round bar. They are usually mounted with the flat side facing the fretboard, but, since the rod adjusts both ways, I wonder if it would work backwards.

Here's why I ask... I'm installing the rod from the back of the neck (I know many folks do not reccomend this) and as the setup is right now, the rod would mount perfectly if I were to do it backwards, since the adjustment nut is attached to the round bar. If I were to mount it with the flat bar facing the fretboard, I would have to do some more awkward drilling at the hole near the headstock to have it fit right. Plus if I mounted it backwards, the nut would be much easier to access.

This is the rod I'm using: http://www.alliedlutherie.com/truss_rods.htm

Any thoughts?

I inverted one of the double-action with two rods.
It works fine, just backwards.
It was the first guitar I made and if doing that causes
problems I haven't seen them. It's been less than a year
though.

The instructions for yours states; "should be" - not "has to be".
Maybe "should be" is so that it will work as "normal".

You may want to hear from others though.

Try getting in touch with Mark Blanchard at blanchardguitars.com. It's his design.

I called him and he said he doesn't see why not, you just have to take into consideration that it will work backwards.

He also recommended his deluxe version which he'll cut to any length for you. Nice guy.

I wouldn't try it sideways...
