I'm building an all maple Les Paul style guitar at a high school where I teach. I work in the wood shop afterschool and lunch breaks but I always bring the parts and pieces back to my tech lab where I put them on a display table - just to show the kids the 'work in prgress'.

What's funny is that many, many of them are quite surprised that I am building it out of wood. At first they thought it would be an acoustic and wondered how I was going to hollow it out (leaving a round hole in the middle).

"Not the case, kids, it's a solidbody electric."
"But it's made out of wood."
"What did you think they were made of?"
"Metal"
"Fibreglass"
"Plastic"
"I don't know ..."

I just find this funny. But then again, I have no idea what golf balls are made of.

About like the kids at my church talking about my "wood" Ash explorer I built. Like they had no idea wood was used.

Not only that but me bet you tell them that you sneaked into Central Park, at night, with a chain saw and cut down a tree to get the wood.

I'll go you one better...

The buddy that i'm doing my tele build with (the one that is also a guitar player) had no idea that guitars were made of wood idunno . Now granted, this guy isn't obsessed with guitars or think about them constantly, but he's been playing for about 7 years now, and he's a college professor [headinwall]

I love him dearly, though

Central Park is a long way from Canada.

I didn't want to spend a lot of money on select wood from a store, since this is my first build. So I kept my eyes open and found a maple table top (3/4") for 15 bucks. Enough to build this and perhaps another. I just found a solid maple headboard at a yard sale for $5. I'm getting good at finding cheap wood. I also had a nice slab of mahogany given to me a while back. Still waiting to hone my skills before using that one.

Framing is more accurate on newer Moggies. The actual chassis is steel or aluminum, depending on the model.

Dang you guys get cooler all the time!

I LOVE MORGAN!!! bliss

I think the chassis is all al-you-mini-um, but the body work is an ash frame. Not too sure on the more modern stuff they are coming out with. I'm psyched that the 3 wheeler's back!

I work in a guitar store and that is one of those dumb questions they usually ask me, I already have the answers ready:

Q-Why does that guitar have 7 strings?
A-I don't know, it would be simpler if they made em of just one string.

Q-Do you have any cell phone battery chargers?
A-Sorry, but they have them down the street in McDonald's.

Q-Do you have any sheet music for keyboard?
A-Sorry, just for real instruments.

Q-Are electric guitars made of wood?
A-Go play a keyboard.
bliss

The store I was in years ago had been an auto parts store in an earlier life.
After 20 years, some folks still came in wanting their brake drums turned.

Of course, I remember one time some fella walked in looking for bait buckets.

Or the rough dude who came in and laid a revolver on the counter, and asked "how much will you give me?". While the clerk went to clean out his shorts, I explained that we were not a pawn shop.
